A New Year’s Resolution – Give your Home a Good Clean RSS

Posted in Cleaning Services on Jan 11

What with the awful state of United Kingdom weather recently and all the activity around the holiday season I should not be surprised were your home to be a little dusty and a little mildewed too. Instead of getting your family’s New Year off to an irritated start, why not go off together for a Pub Lunch in the countryside after you find a cleaner on Mr-Skill to tidy up the place instead.

There are of course also ups and down to letting people clean your house while you are not there yourself, and this of course comes down to the simple question “Can I trust them?”. One of the many benefits of using Mr-Skill is that we check our Associates very carefully before we list them on our Website. In a sense, finding a cleaner through us is like getting a recommendation from a friend, which far nicer than reading the Yellow Pages and picking up a phone.

The process is very simple too. After you register with us you simply note your requirements down on our Post a Job page and leave the rest to us. Within less time than you might expect you will receive proposals from professional cleaners who already know that you are comparing prices with their peers.

An old friend I know who has worked for Impeccable Cleaners London always has the same thing to say to people who ask whether their personnel can be trusted. If we were crooks, he says with a smile, we could make a lot more money doing something else than cleaning for a living. Did I convince you that having people in to clean your home is a good idea? If I did, click on cleaners quotes and leave the rest to us. Another great service from Mr-Skill – the trusted source of rated people.

A New Year’s Resolution – Housekeeping RSS

Posted in Cleaning Services on Dec 27

Now that the first round of Christmas Festivities are over, and mothers all over the world are faced with the task of tidying up after their more or less enthusiastic families, its time for the domestic executive to put her foot down, and inculcate a New Year’s resolution that may stand her off-spring in good stead for years to come. If they don’t, the mailboxes of their blackberries will be forever overloaded with unanswered cleaner quotes.

After all, you’d hardly like to be confronted with your worst nightmare when you visit them after they have flown the nest – not that your little darlings could ever be quite this bad.

o Buy cost-effective eco-friendly cleaning materials in bulk packs from wholesale suppliers, not at downtown shops. Decant these into smaller containers to avoid wastage by over-generous hands.

o Clean up as you go along. Make a habit of wiping down kitchen surfaces and washing up the pots and pans before you sit down to eat. What a pleasure afterwards.

o The firm Cleaners London Sparkling Clean insist on de-cluttering a home before they take up the main contract. That’s because they know that an organized home takes much less time to clean.

o A place for everything and everything in its place are the best two starting points for a clean and tidy home. That’s because, like de-cluttering, they make the cleaning job just that bit easier.

o When everything is in place, draw up a cleaning roster and make sure it gets obeyed. A family of four can keep their home sparkling clean if they just each spend half an hour a day working at it.

Does this sound like a dream in Cloud Cuckoo Land? It doesn’t have to be, especially when you find a cleaner on Mr-Skill to do a once-off sparkle clean to get you started for the New Year. You might even get interviewed by the local papers as an inspiration for others.

Have a Happy and Safety Conscious Christmas RSS

Posted in Cleaning Services on Dec 24

Christmas is the most fantastic time of the year for many. Family and friends gather from near and far and the house is often filled with the happy sounds of three generations again. But when this happens do we think about the unfamiliar safety hazards that may pop and plan for them? Do so, and you celebrate Christmas safely too.

o Are the grand kids coming over? If so, then maybe you need to find a housekeeper LOL. Remember that little children are made to be curious and are quite capable of getting into trouble. Keep the pots on the back rings of the hob, the safety net on the jacuzzi and the cat out of the cot and you have made a food start.

o Are the parents and in-laws coming to visit? If so, remember that their balance and eyesight may not be as good as yours, and that they could trip and fall where you would not have a problem. Play safe and do a check around the garden paths before they arrive.

o All the extra clutter in an overcrowded home can be a sure-fire recipe for tripping and injuries. Don’t spoil their fun, but do keep the place as tidy as you can.

o Watch those extra electric cables draped across the floor to Christmas Trees and other temporary electrical gadgets. Run them around the edge of the room rather – if this is not possible, cover them with a rug. Housekeepers London Incorporated even remove dangerous cables, although I personally think this is a little bit over the top.

o Be careful with decorative lights. Those with green colour coding on the box are suitable for indoor use only, and may never be used on a Christmas Tree whose needles have begun falling out. Do not leave them switched on when unattended.

o Finally, never overload wall sockets with too many plugs. If a plug or cable is warm to the touch you are overloading your lil’ ol’ house, and could be risking an electrical fire. Unplug a few rather than risk damaging electronic appliances.

o Of the subject of the perils of over-eating I could probably write a book. The good news is it is Christmas Day tomorrow and you can have your fill.

Mr-Skill wishes you a happy and safety conscious Christmas Day. If you can’t face the mess the following morning, you could always get housekeeper quotes from us instead. Have a good one.

Have a Green Christmas RSS

Posted in Cleaning Services, Disposals & Waste Removal, Inspirations on Dec 14

Glitzy commercial Christmas produces mounds of extra garbage every year, and the bigger establishments and City authorities have to get additional cleaner quotes to dispose of it. Fortunately, for those with a green conscience, there are things that we can do as individuals to spare Mother Nature at least a little of her Christmas pain.

o Give eco-friendly gifts. Start with the packaging in which they come wrapped – this should come from recycled paper. If it is not, perhaps you could think again. Are the contents made from plastic, in other words from oil by-products? If so, then these could take a thousand years to decompose on a landfill site when no longer wanted, which is bad news. When you shop like this, you strike a small but significant blow for a healthier tomorrow.

o Buy an eco-friendly Christmas tree either made from recycled paper or growing in a pot. Avoid a live or decapitated pine tree at all costs, because these consume huge amounts of water for little long-term benefit. Decorate your Christmas tree with ornaments made by local or rural communities, not in huge factories pumping out pollution in sweatshops.

o Create your own Christmas Cards from recycled ones, or buy cards sold in support of local charities. If your recipients are computer literate, then why not send e-cards instead, and donate the savings to a worthy cause. When you set your Christmas table, have a mind for our poor Planet too. Candles should be soy based (not paraffin based) and everything from the Christmas Turkey to the Peas should be organic too.

When you celebrate Christmas naturally like this, you not only give a great gift to future generations. There will also be one less need to find a cleaner the following day, and housekeepers in London can have the day off too.

Moving into a Dirty House RSS

Posted in Cleaning Services on Nov 22

Did you just take occupation of a house you bought, and find it filthy dirty? Well rest assured that you are not the only one to have this problem – it is often more the rule than the exception nowadays. It happened to me once too. Here are some good ideas I picked up from cleaners in London that gave me sterling service, and were surprisingly cheap too.

o Scuffmarks on a resilient kitchen floor are common even in a well loved home. A rubbing paste made out of baking soda and a little warm water will soon work them away.

o Are the enamelled sinks and bathtubs full of dirty stains? Soak a few brown paper bags in bleach and leave them in them overnight. Next morning, prepare to be pleasantly surprised.

o Many houses smell really awful, as if their owners put up with this for years. Combine one-teaspoon lemon juice and one of baking powder, mix this with two cupfuls of hot water, put the mixture in a trigger spray, spray it around the house, and your smelly problems will be gone.

o To clean a smelly carpet, first make up a mixture of one-cup borax, one-cup cornmeal, and half a cup of baking soda. Leave it sprinkled on the carpet overnight – when you vacuum the mixture up the next morning things will suddenly smell delightfully better.

o If the carpet is dirty, you may be able to use baking soda and vinegar to lift the stains. But, do first test for colourfastness by sprinkling a little baking soda on an inconspicuous patch. If all goes well, pour on a small amount of vinegar. When the bubbling has finished let the carpet dry before finishing off with a vacuum cleaner.

I found these ideas amazing, and they all worked too. No more expensive household cleaning materials for me these days. If you do not have the time to spend on cleaning though, you will find a cleaner easily when you search for cleaner quotes on Mr-Skill.

Get Rid of That Fabric Stain RSS

Posted in Cleaning Services on Nov 04

Expensive items like lounge suites and carpets should be vacuumed and dusted regularly to prevent airborne dust and grime from settling. Accidents still happen through, and then the panic sets in. What to do with little Johnny’s chocolate snack all over the curtains, or the lipstick with which his sister Mary redecorated the couch? Where can we find a cleaner to make the problem go away for us?

o        All stains are by definition liquid, or else they would not penetrate fabric. For first aid, mop stains gently with white paper towel taking care not to make the problem worse.

o        Grease stains, like butter, gravy, fat and salad dressing are best removed by blotting further with a white cloth or paper towel soaked in dry-cleaning liquid. When the pad finally comes away clean, blot the stain again, but this time with dishwashing liquid working from the outside of the stain to the centre.

o        Makeup and Ink stains should be rubbed gently with rubbing alcohol, and then immediately blot-dried. For stubborn stains that do not respond this way, re-blot with a solution of water and vinegar – may sure you blot this away immediately.

o        In the case of Juice, Wine and Tomato-Based Sauce stains wet the affected area lightly with warm water and let this soak in for one minute. Blot dry with paper towel and repeat the process several times until the towel comes clean. After that, rub gently with diluted dishwashing liquid, followed by club soda or tonic water (a favourite trick that cleaners in London use) and blot dry again.

o        In the case of all these stains, finish off finally by blotting with warm water and patting dry with a clean towel. When completely dry, brush to remove any dried dirt and to blend the grain of the fabric back together again.

If the staining is extensive and you do not have the time, then you should consider getting cleaner quotes instead. Stains can set permanently in no time at all, and urgent action is required.

Repair a Cigarette Burn in a Carpet RSS

Posted in Cleaning Services on Sep 28

I read somewhere that toast always falls to the ground jam-and-butter side down. While I do not know whether this is true or not, I do know that the best way to attract a cigarette burn is to fit a new carpet. This is why a good carpet installer always leaves a few scraps behind. If you have a burn to repair, and no matching scraps to do this with, then you may be able to scrounge a patch. If not, remove a small piece of carpet that lies permanently under solid furniture and use this. Some housekeepers in London are capable of doing a job like this – others may not be quite as dedicated.

o Remove only as much of the carpet pile as is necessary. Cut between the pile and avoid straight edges and sharp corners. Do not cut through the underlay, because this will be the link between the carpet and the patch.

o Identify a matching section of the carpet scrap. Carpets often have grains, and there may be repeating patterns too. Cut out a patch slightly larger than the hole that you are going to fill, again avoiding the pile (if the patch is large, it may be useful to make a paper template first).

o Dry fit the patch. If necessary trim it, or begin again if you got things badly wrong. When you are happy with your efforts, align and glue the patch to the underlay with non water-soluble contact adhesive, taking care to avoid staining the surface of the carpet while you do. After waiting 24 hours for the glue to dry, carefully cut away any loose strands with a small sharp pair of scissors, and your repair is complete.

This can be a rewarding weekend job to do. If you do not enjoy this type of project, why not get housekeeper quotes at Mr-Skill and find a housekeeper to do the job for you?

Cleaning a Venetian Blind RSS

Posted in Cleaning Services on Sep 14

Venetian (or horizontally slatted blinds) are really great because you can adjust them to block out bright light and prying eyes too. The downside though is keeping them clean and free of dust. A weekly flick with a feather duster helps – however two or three times a year you really do need to take a Venetian blind down for a good clean. You could find a housekeeper to do this on Mr-Skill, but is this absolutely necessary? Before you find a cleaner, ask yourself the question, could I not do this myself?

o Choose a sunny day. Before you start, locate a ladder and a friend to hold this for you. Professional housekeepers in London fire apprentices for climbing up on chairs to remove blinds, because they know that a fall could be fatal, and that the insurance will not pay for taking chances.

o Lower the blind completely and open up the slats before unclipping it. Place it in a bathtub or a children’s plastic pool. Do not use a bath that has been re-enameled because the vinegar might stain it.

o Fill the bathtub with warm water until the blinds are covered. Add three to four litres of vinegar and mix this in thoroughly with your hands.Wear long-sleeved plastic gloves if your skin is sensitive.

o Leave the blinds soaking until the dirt has dissolved completely. Stirring the water will speed this up.

o Drain the bathtub. Use a shower attachment to rinse the Venetian blind thoroughly. Allow it to dry completely on a towel outside. While you are waiting, clean the bathtub thoroughly.

o Re-hang your Venetian blind. Leave it fully down and the window open. Do not attempt to raise the blind until the strings are fully dry.

If you are not confident that you could do the job yourself, do not stress. Get housekeeper quotes from Mr-Skill.
