Clear the Decks for Spring RSS

Posted in Cleaning Services, Disposals & Waste Removal, Gardening & Landscaping on Feb 15

That’s right. The snow may be lying heavily on the ground this year, but the days of warmer Spring are not far away. This is traditionally the season for clearing everything out that you do not want. Garbage Disposal on Mr-SkillPerhaps you should start planning earlier, before all the waste-removal firms are booked out. We offer an exemplary service in this regard. Mr-Skill is able to offer the following range of helpful services when you are in the mood to tidy up.

Waste Management – The professional removal of potentially toxic industrial and commercial waste to Council specifications. Our specialists are equipped with all pre-requisite waste management safety gear and will complete their task responsibly.

Rubbish Removal – Disposal of general “clean” rubbish in an environmentally friendly way according to local regulations. Many town councils award street rubbish removal contracts to our agents.

Rubbish Removal on Mr-SkillGarden Clean-Ups – A broad-based horticultural service. Unlike similar websites we charge consumers nothing extra for our service. In fact the overwhelming feedback is that our contractors charge lower rates. Winter Gutter Blues RSS

Posted in Roofing, Gutters & Drainage on Feb 06

With winter upon us – and a freezing one at that – many people across the United Kingdom are experiencing problems with their guttering. These can include gutters filled with ice collapsing, and nowhere for water to go when the thaw comes. Is it possible to prevent this? Well, we can’t prevent a blizzard, but we can Find a Roofer to take preventative action for us.

Find a Roofer or Gutterman on Mr-SkillThese are some of the things worth considering when you are busy getting Roofing Quotes.

• When snow gathers on a roof it should thaw gradually without causing problems. But, if you have heat build-up above your ceiling then it might melt all at once, blocking gutters that then freeze up. Two things to do. Check your ceiling insulation, and make there’s provision for any heat to escape.

• Ensure the water entering your gutters can flow smoothly through the down-pipes. This means cleaning them thoroughly twice a year (before and after winter) and testing them from time to time.

• Matt, my London Roofing friend swears by heat tape you can stick along the gutter. Personally, I don’t feel that this is necessary provided you keep them clear.

Find a Roofer or Gutterman on Mr-Skill• Snow guards can provide an extra line of defence, especially if you live up in the north, and they can help keep the gutters clear in summertime too. In fact, I strongly recommend them.

Hopefully you did this already and your gutters won’t come crashing down from the weight of ice this winter. Please do be careful about venturing on the roof yourself to clear excessive snow. It’s just not worth taking risks.

And that’s where Mr-Skill comes in. Did you know that you can Find a Gutter Man right here who’ll clear your blocked gutters promptly, as long as it’s not actually snowing? All our trades come highly recommended too, and rated by our customers. What’s more, you pay nothing for our services.

Preparing Outside Walls for Painting RSS

Posted in Painting & Decorating on Jan 19

Preparing the exterior walls of a house or bungalow for painting is an onerous task that few private homeowners attempt. Does that sound too much for you too? No worries. We can help you Find a Painter who’s been rated by other customers already.

When he or she arrives they complete the preparation of the outside as summarised below. That’s assuming they don’t find anything exceptional, that they did not anticipate when preparing their Detailed Painting Quote. If they do, they’ll negotiate in good faith.

Find a Painter on Mr-SkillCast an eye over the structure to make sure there are no cracks that might admit water and cause damp. They’re likely to report any structural concerns they may detect too, although that’s not the job you’re paying them for.

Clear out and close-up any gaps with rendering. They’ll work elsewhere on the building for the next few days while the fresh plaster dries.

Remove all flaking or damaged paint using a combination of hand-scrapers, sanders, power washing and chemicals. Attend to any mould or fungus.

Discuss the best paints to use and the colours that you like and are practical too. When that’s done they can begin apply the paint.
Find a Painter on Mr-Skill
I was chatting to my old friend a retired London Decorator who has a thought on anything and everything. I just can’t understand, he said, why so many folk try to paint outside in winter, when it makes so much more sense to do the inside then.

That’s the only money that ever changes hands as far as we are concerned. We make not a penny more from it, no kidding, so all this is FREE to you with our compliments. Isn’t it nice to know that you can still get good service like this today?

Posted in Window & Door Fitting on Jan 02

More UK residents are adding the WOW-Factor to their homes every year, by replacing unsightly French Doors with Bi-Folding Doors in PVCu, Find a Window or Door Fitter on Mr-SkillTimber or Aluminium. If contemplating this yourself, please do offset the risks of inadvertent damage against the savings on the labour. • Standard Sizes – If your opening is slightly oversized, consider lining it with appropriate material to take up the gap, and pre-empt requiring an expensive special order
  • Find a Window or Door Fitter on Mr-SkillSlim Sightlines – How much clear vision will the frame sacrifice? You need to get as close to unobstructed as possible, albeit within constraints

Unblock the Loo RSS

Posted in Plumbing, Heating & Gas on Dec 23

One of life’s more unpleasant moments is flushing the loo and watching the pan fill up almost to overflowing on a Sunday morning. Fortunately it never does though, and that’s because bowls and tanks come in matched sets. Find a Plumber on Mr-SkillAnd then there’s the small matter of having to Find a Plumber to come out over a weekend, and what to do without a bathroom while you wait for them to arrive.

This is why many of us like to keep a plunger in the garage “just in case”. These simple tools cost far less than a plumber’s call-out fee, and are just the job when you need them most.

  • Lift up the toilet seat, and insert the plunger rubber-end down trying to trap as much floating matter as you can. While London Plumbers are pretty used to unpleasant jobs like this, even they still wear rubber gloves, and mouth and eye protection.
  • Find a Plumber on Mr-SkillWith the plunger pressed down firmly and covering the toilet outlet completely, pump the handle up and down a few times.
  • HINT As you do so bear in mind that the aim is to get water inside the plunger rubber and then force it out again to clear the stoppage.

This should do the job. If it doesn’t please don’t try to clear the outlet with rods that could crack the porcelain. Rather ask Mr-Skill for a Plumbing Quote from a reputable tradesperson working in your area.

Remember, it costs absolutely nothing to use our services and the plumbers’ rates are fair!

Caring for Paint Brushes RSS

Posted in Painting & Decorating on Dec 02

Good paint brushes are worth the price, although they nevertheless cost a surprising amount of money these days. If you choose not to Find a Painter to do the work for you on Mr-Skill, then you can extend the life of your paintbrushes – and experience the pleasures of working with a well run-in brush, by following these simple tips:

  • Find a Painter on Mr-SkillLondon Painters know the trick of moistening the brush right through with the cleaning medium that they plan to use later, which could be water, turpentine or a specialized liquid. This prevents the brush fibres from absorbing the paint, saving you money, and making cleaning a pleasure later too.
  • Don’t dip the brush so deeply in the paint that the heart fills with paint too. This space is there to provide flexibility in the head, not to act as a reservoir for generating paint spills.
  • Work the brush back and forth against the job. This not only provides a better finish, it also helps the brush maintain its shape.
  • After you have thoroughly cleaned the used paintbrush using the appropriate cleaning medium, squirt a dollop of dishwashing fluid into the heart of the brush and work it through to the outside with http://www.mr-skill.co.uk/jobs/painting-and-decorating/your fingers. Rinse clean under running water making sure it comes clear on the inside too, and then lightly flick the brush dry somewhere where you can stand a little mess.
  • Finally, reshape the damp paintbrush with your fingers, and leave it somewhere suitable to dry. That way, it will be perfectly ready for you when you need it next.

If this sounds like too much work for you, then you could always Get Painting Quotes on Mr-Skill instead. You’ll be surprised at the quality of their work, and the amount of money that you could save when you use our painters, compared to general market rates.

Decorating Safely RSS

Posted in Painting & Decorating on Aug 24

The prospect of picking up a few pots of paint and some paint brushes down at the hardware store, and getting stuck into redecorating over the weekend is an attractive one. But plummeting off a ladder and being crowned by an open tin of paint is hardly such a good idea. Find a Painter on Mr-Skill

If you can’t find someone to do a Painting Job in London for you (which is unlikely on Mr-Skill) then here are a few tips to keep you safe:

o Avoid wearing loose clothing of any kind, as this can get tangled in tools and ladders, and might cause a serious injury. The same goes for necklaces and bracelets too. While on the subject of clothing, remember to wear sensible shoes. Many an accident has been caused by beach thongs.

o Make sure that your ladder is in perfect condition, with no damaged steps or missing parts. If it doesn’t click firmly into position and stand steadily, don’t use it. Rather be safe and get some Painting Quotes instead.

o Find a Painter on Mr-SkillKeep the floor area clear. More people have tripped and fallen this way than in any other. Create a rule and stick to it.

o Turn off the electricity main switch before you remove any cover plates, and seal off any open spaces around them with painter’s tape before you turn them on again. Don’t take chances here – it’s not all that unusual to find the internals of a switch lying loose inside the cover.

Now that you have had a chance to review the safety aspects outlined above, you may be more inclined to Find a Decorator. Should that be the case then you can locate one on Mr-Skill, where we cover almost every post code, and recommend our tradespeople personally. We wish you a safe day, and happy home decorating!

Refinish a Wooden Table RSS

Posted in Painting & Decorating on Aug 02

There is still a great deal to be said for dining at a solid wooden table, although these days we often seem to end up with laminated composite board instead that admittedly helps keep things more affordable. This is not to say that bargains are not waiting to be found at charity shops and auction rooms, although these have inevitably ended up becoming tatty, which is why they are there in the first place.

This does not mean to say that they cannot quite easily be restored, provided, that is, that the wear and tear is strictly Find a Decorator on Mr-Skillsuperficial, and that all the bits are there. Interested? Then never mind about getting a Painter Quote right now. Let’s first learn how the job should be done.

o Identify a suitable working environment that is free of dust and floating pollen. That means working inside somewhere assuming you are aiming at a gleaming finish.

o Work outside initially though, sanding the woodwork down with fine-grit paper until it is nice and smooth, and finishing off with steel wool until the job is as good as you can get. Every Decorator in London knows that the secret is in the preparation, so allow a full day for an average-sized dining room table, never mind the chairs.

o Wipe the table down with a damp cloth removing every single scrap of dust, finishing off with a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with mineral turpentine. Take your work inside to where you plan to finish off the job the following day.

o Find a Decorator on Mr-SkillApply a coat of the finishing product that you have chosen, be this varnish, polyurethane or some other more exotic choice. Always use a clear product too, so that you bring out the natural character of the wood.

o When this has dried thoroughly sand the surface down lightly again, until you have broken through the sheen. If there are any bumps caused by dust or imperfections, slice these away carefully with a sharp blade. Dust off your work thoroughly, and wipe it carefully with a lint-free cloth moistened in clean water this time.

o Repeat the process as many times as you have patience for, because every coat is guaranteed to improve the finish and enhance the sheen. If you decide to Find a Decorator to do the job for you instead, you know by now why it is so important to agree a specification of exactly what they intend to do.

I have an old ball and claw mahogany dining table that I did up myself a decade or so ago and finished off with clear polyurethane varnish. Many have admired the natural, lighter colour that comes shining through, although I should think that few would have the patience to achieve it.

Seal a Flat Garage Roof RSS

Posted in General Building on Aug 01

In times past flat garage roofs were often covered with a layer of waterproofed felt that was protected in turn by a layer of gravel. The general idea was that these roofs would last for years, provided that they were not interfered with. Over-and-above the obvious hazards of small children Find a Builder on Mr-Skillenjoying squishing on sharp stones, nothing lasts forever, leaks develop and drip onto whatever you use your garage for, and its time to Find a Builder fairly urgently, to effect repairs.

We have all kinds of rated general builders listed on Mr-Skill. You can Find Recommended London Builders here, as well as trusted building firms in the Home Counties, and as far afield as Wales and Scotland too. When you do, these are the procedures that they should follow after you accept their Building Quote, give or take the peculiarities of your particular flat roof.

o On a clear day with no sign of rain the next day either, clear the gravel off the roof. Sweep the area clean, and blow all the dust away with one of those clever gadgets gardeners use instead of rakes these days.

o Inspect the roof felting very carefully for any signs of damage. Don’t be shy to prod and probe as Find a Builder on Mr-Skilldentists like to do – if there is a problem it must be found. Mark a circle around any dodgy points with bright paint.

o Obtain some asphalt plastic cement, and work this well into all the dodgy points you noted. Take your time here, as this could make or break the job. And do wear rubber gloves too. This stuff sticks to skin like you know what. As you go along, work pieces of roof patching fabric into the cement, remembering to cover it fully and to “feather” the edges.

When the patches are nice and dry inspect them carefully, adding a generous dollop of asphalt plastic cement if in any doubt at all. When you are completely satisfied that this cement is dry too, you can gently sweep the old gravel back over the roof again. Or spoil your roof with some brand new gravel, so you can enjoy looking down on your garage roof again from upstairs even more.

Posted in Cleaning Services on Apr 24

Office CleanerThankfully, the days are far gone now when cleaners asked you to move away from your desk so that they could vacuum underneath it and empty your waste-paper basket.
