Legal Implications of Part P of the Electrical Regulations RSS

Posted in Electrical Work on Sep 26

The United Kingdom government added Part P to the Electrical Regulations in 2005, with the intention of eliminating cowboy installers and discouraging dangerous work by homeowners who lacked essential skills. The intention was to give local Councils improved oversight over what was happening, and to eliminate potentially lethal situations. This was one of the drivers behind the establishment of Mr-Skill. We want to help people Find an Electrician who is properly registered, and whose work should be readily approved by the local Council too.

Find an Electrician on Mr-SkillFailure to comply with Part P can have the following serious implications for United Kingdom householders:

• Accidental death through electric shock …
• Permanent disability through electric shock …
• An electrical fire not covered by home insurance …
• Impediments to the sale of a property …
• A fine not exceeding £50,000 …

We encourage our readers to consider carefully whether these are not sufficient reasons in themselves to get Electrician Quotes instead.

While we do not discourage all DIY Electrical Work by competent and capable people, we decided to list the Do’s and Dont’s that apply to this. This is because we would like to see less than the 10 deaths, 750 serious injuries and 12,500 fires caused by faulty amateur electrical work in the United Kingdom every year. In considering the lists of permitted and outlawed amateur Electrical Work that follow, please bear in mind that the scope applies to dwellings, outbuildings of any kind including garden sheds, and common areas of communal space too.

Find an Electrician on Mr-SkillWork falling Within the Scope of Part P

New or rewired installations, circuits, fuse boards, sockets, lighting points, and power showers. Supply to outbuildings and installations therein. Under floor heating, pool pumps, garden lighting, and generators.

Work falling Outside the Scope of Part P

Connecting an appliance to an existing circuit. Replacing damaged single-circuit wiring, single outlets and single light fittings. Fitting a storage heater to an existing adjacent connection point, and replacing an immersion heater.

We encourage all our customers to comply with these regulations for their health and safety’s sake, and not to take on electrical work with which they are unfamiliar. We list rated London Electricians and their counterparts in virtually every United Kingdom town, whose quality services are also up to 30% less than prevailing rates. It’s just not worth taking chances with electricity and lives.

Electricity Safety in the Bathroom RSS

Posted in Electrical Work on Jun 26

At Mr-Skill, electrical safety is paramount to all of us, and this is why we recommend that you Find an Electrician on our Pages if in any doubt at all. We use this wonderful source of instant energy so many times a day that we too easily forget that it could also be dangerous too. Avoid risks by having your home installation checked once a year (or sooner if in any doubt at all). Find an ElectricianYou can ask for competitive Electrician Quotes any time of the day or night here, and we’ll reply soon.

Electrical safety is especially important in the bathroom. Stick to the following safety hints when you are there. Enjoy greater peace of mind. Remember that water is a conductor that can take electricity to ground through you, and that wet skin reduces your resistance.

o With the exception of professionally installed and grounded shaver sockets no electricity outlets are allowed in bathrooms. This includes connections to light fittings, plugs inside illuminated cabinets, and extension cables brought in through windows and doors.

o Shaver sockets must be positioned a safe distance from water sources. You ought not to be able to reach across with hands outstretched. My Brother, who is a well-known Electrician in London refuses to Find an Electricianinstall these fittings at all. Bathrooms are small, he says. Besides, what’s the point of it, in these days of rechargeable razors.

o Only, ever install ceiling light fittings in any bathroom, and make sure that these are fully enclosed. If you must install a light switch inside the room, the only ones permitted are insulated pull-cord types.

o Under no circumstances install electric heaters in the bathroom of your home. A power shower must be connected directly to the mains distribution board, well grounded, and without any joints in the cable.

We’re in a more serious mood today. People get hurt, maimed or even killed by electricity in the UK every week. If what we wrote this time makes you more cautious then maybe that is good. Remember, it costs you nothing to get Electrical Quotes from Mr-Skill. Please be careful with electricity.

A New Year’s Resolution – Make Electricity Safe at Home RSS

Posted in Electrical Work, Project Advice on Jan 04

We are all guilty of doing silly things with electricity from time to time – things like attaching an extra light in the garage, or making a quick connection for a compressor in the workshop when in a hurry. The problem of course is that we get used to temporary things far too easily, and only recall them when the insurance assessor turns down a claim for a fire that burned down the home.

It is as serious as that, and electricity can kill too. It might not be you who gets the shock. It could be your spouse or perhaps even your children. If what we are describing sounds like your home, it is time to celebrate the New Year by resolving to find an electrician to inspect and make good your premises.

Every few years Authentic Electricians London send out reminders to all their customers that it is time to check the earths on all their systems. This is a practice that we should all follow too, because without a proper functional earth no electricity point is safe.

You could also be held personally liable by a Court of Law were an unsafe electric connection at your business cause injury or worse. Could there be a worse time to spend a night in jail? This is why at this important family time of the year Mr-Skill recommends that all its customers get electrician quotes to inspect their home wiring if in any doubt at all. It is simply not worth taking the risk when such a low inspection fee is involved.

Keep your Christmas Tree Safe RSS

Posted in Electrical Work on Dec 23

Did you know that every year Christmas Trees burn down houses in the United Kingdom? Before rushing off to get electrician quotes to check your little colored bulbs for safety, first make sure that it is not your tree itself that is the risk.

The conifers that people like to top and sell as Christmas Trees are full of natural resins that go up like roman candles, and a single hot light bulb pressing up against one could easily ignite a dried-out needle. Before you know it, your Christmas Tree could be a sheet of flame reaching out for the ceiling while you were out shipping for Christmas crackers. Here’s how to avoid this happening (after you do obvious things like not leaving the lights unattended and keeping naked flames far away).

o Buy a freshly cut tree that has not already started to dry out. The tree trunk should be sticky and the pine needles still very flexible – if they spring back or pull out easily your tree is already dead and drying out. As a final test bounce the tree off the ground. If needles come tumbling out like ants, think again.

o Electricians London Incorporated offer wise advice that comes free with every set of Christmas lights they supply. Cut the bottom two inches off the trunk before you stand it in a full bucket of water for the first drink as soon as you get it home. That way it will be able to suck up ample moisture.

o Help your Christmas Tree stay moist by letting it stand in water for the duration of the festive season, and keep it well away from fires and heaters that could ignite it if it topples over. You can also lightly spray the needles with water from time to time – just make sure the lights are unplugged at the wall when you do.

Even good things do not last forever, and by January 2nd it is time to say goodbye to your Christmas Tree and dispose of it in a socially responsible manner. Check the strings of little colored lights carefully as you pack them away, and don’t hesitate to find an electrician to check them for you if in any doubt.

Garden Outdoor Lights RSS

Posted in Electrical Work, Gardening & Landscaping on Nov 16

We’re always talking about putting lights outside in the garden, aren’t we. And then something else diverts us and nothing gets done. Why is this, I wonder? Are we put off by the imagined complexities of the job, or the thought of the expense? Whichever it may be, here are some ideas to get the imaginative juices going.

Your first choice is between portable solar battery powered light, and fixed installations hard-wired back to the house. Solar is great if you are looking for subtle illumination of a shrub, but no good at all if you wanted to light up the general garden. Never ever, and I mean never attempt to wire up an outside electric fitting yourself. This is because a mistake could be deadly in the rain. Rather get electrician quotes from Mr-Skill to help you find an
electrician
who can be trusted.

o All gardens have a path leading up to the front door, and this needs to be well lit up when you return home after dark. Bottle lights hanging from eaves are so old-fashioned now – how about a row of designer lights along the path instead?

o Is there a particular spot in the garden that you would like to highlight after dark? Perhaps this is a tinkling fountain or a set of dramatic pots. Local lighting is what you need to buy.

o Maybe your desire is to make gentle brushstrokes like nature at the break of dawn. This is where portable solar battery power light comes in. Just imagine what it would be like to walk in the early morning in your garden lit up like this.

There is no end to what can be done with garden lighting, especially when we let our imaginations run free. Remember though not to attempt to wire outdoor lighting yourself – I know for one that electricians in London will never touch an unprofessional wiring job done by an amateur outside in a garden.

Freshen up a Room for Just a Few Pounds RSS

Posted in Cleaning Services, Electrical Work, Moving Homes & Hauliers, Painting & Decorating on Nov 15

Does the appearance of your lounge or bedroom depress you? Do you feel like chucking out everything and starting all over again? I heard you loud and clear – not everybody has the money to pay for major redecorations. Instead, here are a few tips on inexpensive innovations that you could even achieve your self.

o Invest in Full Spectrum Light Bulbs

Many of us still have not quite caught up with modern light bulbs and are using old ones that make everything look dull. Full Spectrum Light Bulbs produce natural illumination just like the sun was shining indoors too. You will be amazed at how much brighter and cleaner everything looks inside your home. Don’t take chances if an old bulb is stuck though – find an electrician at Mr-Skill.

o Apply some Elbow Grease

Now that you can finally see properly in the room you will notice clutter and dirty spots that you may not have noticed before. You need to do two things urgently – first de-clutter the space, and then give everything a good clean. If a piece of unwanted furniture is too heavy for you to shift yourself, find a man-with-a-van here.

o Buy a Small Tin of Paint

A quart-sized tin of modern paint goes a long way these days. You could redecorate one wall, the door or window frames, or even a piece of furniture like a table in a chic new colour. Don’t remodel – just add fresh highlights. This time you may not even need to find a painter.

o Add a Few Accessories

To complete the picture and the transformation of your room why not invest in a few inexpensive accessories like rugs and silk flowers in bright vases Second hand shops often have antique mirrors and table lights that can be spruced up for next to nothing. That way, you get more style for less money too.

By following these ideas, you will achieve an “almost new” room for very little outlay. Thanks Heavens for Mr-Skill and their good ideas.

Install a Ceiling Fan RSS

Posted in Electrical Work on Oct 30

A ceiling fan is a far cheaper alternative to air-conditioning, and little more is usually needed for United Kingdom summer nights. These days, ceiling fans look attractive too, and can add to the pleasantness of almost any room. If you are fit and handy too, then you could perhaps avoid getting electrician quotes and do the job yourself.

o The first decision to make is where to install a ceiling fan on the ceiling – this decision is frequently made for you already. This is because the correct location of a ceiling fan is in the middle of the room, and that is where the existing light fitting usually is. Most modern ceiling fans come with incorporated lights as well, and so there is no loss of ambient lighting either.

o Before you start, turn off the light switch, and the mains switch too. Electricians in London like to tape a sign over the mains box stating that it is “locked out”. That way they eliminate the possibility of somebody turning the power back on again accidentally.

o Remove the existing light fitting and fit the ceiling fan junction box in its place. If you are working with a suspended or plastered ceiling, you may need to fit an additional wooden joist if the rafters are not exactly where you need them to be. A ceiling fan is a heavy item and you must make sure that you have attached the junction box securely.

o Attach the hanger pipe to the top of the fan motor (remembering to feed the wires through it first) using the screws supplied.

o Attach the fan blades and then hang the assembly from the ceiling by slipping the hanger pipe collar through the slot in the junction box.

o Connect the fan to the house supply, making sure that the earth wire is tightly attached. Slip the ceiling cover all the way up the hanger pipe, secure it with the captive screw, and you are almost finished.

o Turn the power supply back on again and test the fan. If it wobbles excessively, balance the blades according to the manufacturer’s instructions supplied.

The job seems simple, doesn’t it? In practice though, balancing on a ladder holding a heavy ceiling fan is not a simple task. Perhaps you should rather find an electrician on Mr Skill to do the job properly and safely for you instead.

Install a Surface Mounted Power Shower RSS

Posted in Electrical Work, Plumbing, Heating & Gas on Sep 23

While a hot bath has always been a popular place to relax, these days many prefer the massaging effect on the body that a good shower provides. In older houses where hot water pressure is low, a power shower is the answer. Please note that you must have an electrician check for safety before you use you use your power shower for the first time. You can find an electrician at Mr-Skill.

o Decide where to locate the power shower unit on the wall. Remove the front cover, position the unit carefully on the wall and outline its position with a marker pen. At the same time, mark where holes are required for attaching screws.

o Using a metal detector, establish the location of existing pipes and cables in the wall, and mark these clearly. Drill holes for mounting the power shower unit, after checking that these align correctly using a spirit level, and will not pass through any existing pipes or cables. Adjust the intended position of the power shower unit if this is necessary.

o Attach the unit to the wall. A useful tip that electricians in London use is to mount a power shower on a rubber pad to absorb vibration.

o After getting electrician quotes and having power laid on, you can proceed with the plumbing. Remove the existing taps and connect the power shower to the exposed connection points. Turn the water on again. After that, fit the riser pipe and shower head bracket.

Call the electrician back to re-check electrical safety. When they are gone, fit the cover to the power shower unit, turn on the water supply, and you have finished your power shower installation.

How to Change a Plug RSS

Posted in Electrical Work on Sep 16

Critics argue that the standard electric plugs in Britain are the biggest, the ugliest and the most difficult to wire anywhere on earth. That may well be so however our ugly friends are also the safest in the world, especially as they have the option of various strengths of on-board fuse. You do not need to find an electrician to do the job unless your eyesight is weak or your grip is a little feeble. If in doubt, get electrician quotes from the website Mr-Skill

o Select your new plug down at your local hardware store, and the right fuse that goes with it. Specifications are as follows: up to 700 watts 3 amps; 700 to 1000 watts 5 amps; above that you must buy a 13-amp fuse.

o Using a medium screwdriver, loosen off the captive screw on the underside of the plug, until the cover comes loose. Take care that neither the pins nor the fuse fall out when you remove it. Also, remove the strap that secures the electric cable.

o Remove the coloured cable strands attached to the pins by loosening off the screws, and then withdrawing them. Examine the cable for any defects, and discard it if in any doubt at all. If everything is in order, you can reuse the cable. If not you will have to trim the new cable to match the old.

o United Kingdom wiring conventions are blue for neutral, brown for live and green for earth. Identify which pin is which by locating the corresponding markings on the plug casing. You must adhere to these conventions or somebody could get hurt.

o Fit each coloured strand in turn to the appropriate pin and attach them tightly with the screws. Electricians in London always twist the exposed ends of the wires to ensure a tighter connection. As you go, always double check that you are connecting the correct wire to the correct pin.

o Make sure that the wires run correctly. They may not twist around each other, or follow a route where the cover could pinch them. When satisfied, secure them with the bridge. Finally, re-tighten the screws again that attach the coloured strands to the pins – you will find that the exposed ends of the wires have flattened and could work loose if you do not do this.

o Finally, refit the cover to the plug. The first time that you turn the appliance on again, make sure that a friend is standing by, just in case there is a problem.
