Make Sure it Measures Up! RSS

Posted in Carpentry & Joinery, General Building, Tiling & Flooring on Aug 21

Once you have decided to go ahead and get on with a project, one of the greatest frustrations to making a good start is not having a decent measuring device. Whether its woodwork, metalwork, tiling, building or even planting out the garden, accurate measuring forms the vital start point. And, as our Alf says – he’s one of our regular London tilers – “if you get it wrong from the outset, imagine how you’ll be feeling when all is said and done!”

Traditional Tape Measures Find a carpenter on Mr-Skill

This is what most of us buy as a basic start up. But today, there’s such a wide selection, with literally hundreds of variations to choose from. Practicality suggests that you purchase one that is easy to read and use. Here at Mr-Skill, we concluded that a 3 meter-long flexible metal tape measure – with a 13mm wide blade – makes a useful tool. Oh, and make sure it has a yellow backing with clear black numbering in centimetres and inches, as well as a blade lock and a smooth retracting mechanism. Of course, you could find a carpenter right here and leave the calculations to them too!

We have all used tape measures that threaten to slice our fingertips off when we reel them in! A smaller belt tape should suffice for most project work. Bigger projects, such as built-in cupboards for example, may benefit from an 8 meter tape with a 19mm or wider blade. However Alf simply cannot do without his long-standing 300mm long steel rule. With the measurements etched on the stainless steel face, this one is in it for the long haul.

Callipers

A 200mm basic vernier calliper finished in stainless steel is very useful when cutting mortises or tenons, where accuracy is paramount. This measure is also handy for fitting butt hinges, when you need to measure the thickness of the leaf, and you cannot do so accurately with a tape or rule. Don’t forget to have a set-square available to check for perfect right angles when needed. Find a carpenter on Mr-Skill

Keeping it Simple

These days, there are all sorts of clever gadgets that allegedly make our working lives simpler. Electronic room measurers for example – they cost a fortune and by the time you have figured out how the infernal device actually works, the batteries have gone flat and you could have long since finished the job using a conventional measure. If this all seems code to you, rather get a general building quote here on Mr Skill. That way, you can sit back and relax while the professionals work out the detail and do the measuring. As our Alf always says, “life is too short for hassles!”

Choosing Locksmiths Wisely RSS

Posted in Locksmith on Mar 08

Most of us don’t think twice about a locksmith, until we actually need one. The problem could be at your home, the safe in your office, or maybe the fact that you have locked yourself out of your car. Whatever the situation, you are in a state of panic. This unwanted event might easily ruin your day.

Find a Locksmith on Mr-SkillThe intricate design of modern locks and keys means that once we have locked ourselves out, there is very little that we can do about it. Sure, you could smash a window in your car or house, but that will likely attract the attention of the neighbours and the long arm of the law!

Try explaining why you are breaking into your own car or house then. You could well end up in trouble! Rather find a locksmith on the basis that they are experts in electronic and mechanical locks, and can return your situation to normal as soon as possible.

Locksmith Services

Locks – A London locksmith will stock a wide range of products, covering all leading brands. Make sure that you are dealing with a registered locksmith before you call.

Key Cutting – An approved locksmith with a key code or sample should be able to help you straight away.

Find a Locksmith on Mr-SkillSafes – If you have lost the key to your safe, you will have no other option. Contact your approved local locksmith (unless you have a friend with a stick of dynamite).

Vehicle Keys – Car dealers are careful about replacing key sets without proof of ownership. Your approved locksmith should be able to advise what to do.

Choosing a Locksmith

It is important to check that your insurer approves your locksmith if you plan to claim. When you ask for a locksmith quote, make sure they are current members of the Master Locksmith Association. Remember, that locksmith will have knowledge of your keys and locks, so be careful who you deal with. It’s far safer to work through Mr-Skill, and it’s free to customers too.

Principles of Soldering RSS

Posted in Electrical Work on Jan 23

The last thing you need in any circuit is a dry joint, by which I mean two wires twisted round each other or even worse. In a home, this can cause the power to keep on tripping, while in the low voltage world the result is a random electronic fault.

Find an Electrician on Mr-SkillFrom time-to-time it’s necessary to get a soldering-iron out. Before you rush around looking for an Electrician Quote it might just be possible to do the job yourself.

• Preparation Clean both parts that you are planning to solder into a joint. Hardened, damaged wire is a recipe for disaster so make sure everything is shiny new by stripping off a fresh end. While at it, remove any vestiges of solder if you’re repairing an existing joint. That’s because solder does not stick to itself at all well when not fresh.

• Tinning Heat each surface in turn until it just melts a bead of solder. Work this back and forth until you see a little amber liquid appear. That’s the tinning that’s the meat in a good joint. It will be HOT. Allow the material Find an Electrician on Mr-Skillto cool down naturally before you touch it with your hands.

• Soldering Mount the larger of the pieces to be joined securely in a vice. Heat up its surface until solder melts instantly on it. Place the other tinned piece in the pool of solder, remove the soldering iron, and wait until the surface of the melted solder goes slightly dull. Allow the joint, which will be HOT to cool naturally.

If you have a soldering iron that’s in good order and you have the time, you don’t really need to Find an Electrician, do you? But beware one thing, and that’s a bad joint. A London Electrician I know tests his apprentices’ work by seeing whether he can pull it apart.

A Locksmith is Your Friend RSS

Posted in Locksmith on May 26

Locksmithing is an ancient art that goes back to earliest days when a locking device was often a wooden bar slotted inside a bedroom door. These days of course the art of Find a Locksmithlocking has become a science in many regards, and the days of using a metal pick are largely history.

There are a number of reasons for this. One is the increasing cleverness of thieves for whom the average mechanical lock is a cake walk. Another is our increasing obsession with electronics and high technology, which sometimes leads us to spend more than we ought.

There are several reasons why you might need to Find a Locksmith on Mr-Skill, and often urgently too.

o Losing a key is something that we all do from time to time, and naturally at the most inconvenient moments. The scariest is when we drop one into a drain in the street – out of reach but there for everyone to see. When this happens there is no time to Get Locksmith Quotes. We need our key retrieved, or a new one supplied urgently.

o Another common reason is when a lock suddenly fails to operate. This could be owing to a mechanical one jamming up, or an irritating piece of electronics suddenly failing. Find a LocksmithWe stand outside our front door, or our office or our car feeling helpless and hopelessly aggrieved. Many a Locksmith in London has been called out at two in the morning, fixed the problem and then had his overtime rate challenged. I cry foul – the labourer is worthy of their hire, just like the good book says.

o Finally there are the irritating moments when a key breaks off in a lock, and we realize that we should have done something about it as we watched it weakening. If you have a key halfway cracked through or that keeps on bending, my advice as a locksmith is – fix it now.

I say thank heavens for good locksmiths even though I try to be one myself. We may be overlooked at Christmastide, but we like to think we do our jobs well. Remember us when you need us.
