The Difference Between Cleaning and Waste Disposal RSS

Posted in Cleaning Services, Disposals & Waste Removal on Mar 31

We had a call from a customer the other day, who was confused as to why a cleaner wouldn’t take some old acid containers away – especially after they loaded all the cardboard boxes they cleared from his garage. We thought it would be a good idea to explain the difference, and to generally set the record right.

  • Generally speaking, cleaners tidy sweep and clean a home or office, pretty much the same way we might do ourselves, if we Find a Cleaner on Mr-Skillonly had the time. In the course of this, they bag the contents of waste-paper baskets and rubbish bins, so you can leave these out on the next council collection day.
  • If you want the service people to take the bags down to the council depot as well, then you need to ensure they include this as an option on their cleaning quote. That’s because this job will involve extra time and petrol, and they’re entitled to their compensation.
  • Certain types of materials and chemicals are classified as toxic, as they could harm an operator at a landfill site who comes in contact with them. The government has established rules for their safe disposal. Councils have procedures in place to make this possible.
  • Find a Toxic Waste Remover on Mr-SkillOur client who called us actually needed to find a waste disposal expert to remove the acid containers, not a cleaner.  They would be equipped with specialist protection to avoid contamination themselves. It’s vitally important to understand the distinction, and not to pressurise a regular cleaner to take risks.

Mr-Skill has both kinds of service people on their books. Our customers have rated almost all of them down the years too.

Should you require the services of a top-rate London cleaner, or assistance with cleaning or waste disposal almost anywhere else in Britain, why not log onto our website and log your request right now? Our operators are on standby, and waiting for your call.

Create a New Opening for French Doors RSS

Posted in Window & Door Fitting on Aug 31

Wouldn’t it be nice to have the dining room opening directly into the garden on a balmy summer’s day? What a good idea except you only have a window, and climbing in and out through it is hardly everybody’s idea of fun. Well then, why not convert the window to a set of french doors instead? After all, Door Fitters in London do this sort of thing every day.

o Call in a supplier to measure up, quote and make up a new set of doors for you, and do nothing else yourself, until these arrive and have been checked for size. They should be exactly the same width as the existing window, unless that Find a Door Fitter on Mr-Skillis you are looking for a whole lot more work to do.

o Empty the room completely. Remove one opening window pane so you can climb in and out through the opening. Secure the inter-leading door and mask around it. Also mask around the doors of any cupboards and protect anything else appropriate from dust.

o Remove the window and its frame completely, being extra careful not to disturb any plaster. If you notice any cracks in the wall above the opening immediately prop it, and seek expert advice. Changing windows into doors is a job only for the brave. That’s why so many British homeowners get Door Fitting Quotes on Mr-Skill instead.

o Mark perpendicular lines from the left and right bottom sides of the existing opening down to floor level, on both sides of the wall. Check and double-check these carefully. Cut through these lines with an angle grinder, working alternatively from the inside and the outside, until you can see light shine right through. Do your best to cut square with the wall, because this will make the rest of your task far easier.

o Break out the wall using a large hammer. The masonry will be resting on the damp course and may even come out in a single piece, so take care it does not fall on precious children, tools and dogs. Find a Door Fitter on Mr-SkillRemove the rubble. Tidy up the opening. Clean up the room. The dirty work is done.

o Remove the french doors from the window frame (if pre-fitted) and offer the frame up to the opening. It should be a close fit, but not a tight one. Wedge it in position and check that it is vertical, plumb, level and square. Use more wedges to adjust it until everything is perfect. Get this wrong, and the doors won’t close properly.

o Attach the frame permanently to the wall with plugs and screws. Remember to drive them in the last few turns by hand, in case they need to come out later to make a change. Then hang your doors, making tiny adjustments as you go along until everything is perfect. Install the locks and handles. Your home is secure again, and you didn’t need to Find a Door Fitter either (although you could have on Mr-Skill). You can even open up the inter-leading door again to receive a well-deserved cup of tea.

All that’s left to do is to tidy up the inside rendering, touch up with paint and seal around the frame outside with silicone. It’s nice when a job like this comes together relatively easily. Won’t the neighbours be surprised…

Step 1 – Strip out the Old Kitchen RSS

Posted in Kitchen Fitting on Feb 03

Stripping out an old Kitchen is not the most pleasant way to spend a Saturday. This is because you will be surprised at the old filth that you can find and could pick up a nasty badly infected cut too. For this reason we recommended that you wear stout clothing, a pair of good boots, heavy duty gloves and a face mask. I know that Harry’s Kitchen Fitters in London insist that their staff disinfect their hands and faces after every job. Doesn’t appeal to you? Rather Find a Kitchen Fitter on Mr-Skill. If you are game, read on.

o Make sure that you have everything you need for your replacement Kitchen before you start, that you have inspected it and that nothing is missing, damaged or broken.

o Set up a temporary Kitchen in another room where you can make a cup of tea and heat take
aways in the microwave.

o Clear everything out of the kitchen cupboards, and I do mean everything. If you don’t want it, de-clutter it and chuck it away.

o Turn off the electricity and water and have a Gas Safe technician isolate the gas. Remove all appliances so that just the cabinets are left.

o Remove all doors and drawers and store them neatly outside in the yard. Find out how the worktops are attached (usually with screws from underneath) and remove them to the yard too. Try to remove the sections intact – believe me this is quicker that ending up with a pile of dirty, dusty scrap

Are you sweating at the thought of all this work? Either get a Kitchen Fitter Quote or read on.

o Remove the floor-standing cabinets. If you are lucky these were assembled in sections and you just need to separate them from each other and the wall. If your home is very old though they may have been built up on site. In that case, forget about what I said about removing them intact and use a wrecking bar (mind the wall). Remove the upper cabinets in the same way. You will need help with this because they can be fairly heavy.

o Finally remove the wall tiles and the floor covering (unless the latter is still firmly in position and can be covered over with flexible flooring or tiles)

After you have stored all the scrap tidily outside in the yard (I am a nag but you will appreciate the thought tomorrow) give the Kitchen a thorough clean so you have a clear start in the morning. If you have any energy left over, wash it down with sugar soap followed by a mild disinfectant. You have decided you need help with this after all? No problem. Contact Mr-Skill.

A New Year’s Resolution – Skim the Lounge Ceiling RSS

Posted in Plastering & Drywall on Jan 06

Why put up with an ugly old fashioned Artex ceiling in the lounge, when with less that half your Christmas Bonus you might be able to replace it with a modern skimmed one. Just imagine what your mother-in-law might say when you surprise her with it when she comes for Sunday Lunch. My goodness, she might even finally realise that her child made a good catch.

Back from Cloud Cuckoo Land though, there are a few downsides to having a ceiling skimmed that you need to know before you get plastering quotes:

o The job is an extremely messy one. Plaster does not stick easily upside down and you have to vacate the room. A good time to skim a ceiling is just before a new carpet goes in – that way there is no need to get upset about the mess.

o Imperial Plasterers London always recommends skimming over existing Artex wherever possible, provided that it is still firmly attached. The problem comes with the modern houses developers love to build. There the Artex effect is usually so thin that the skimming plaster cannot stick. In this case, the whole lot has to be chipped away, and I hardly need to tell you about the dust.

This does not mean that you should not have the ceiling skimming job done. Regardless of the mess you will enjoy the effect afterwards, and you should add many more pounds to the value of your home too. The secret to success is to find a plasterer on Mr Skill who knows what they are about, how to work quickly, and how to limit the mess while they do.

Basement Inspirations RSS

Posted in General Building, General Building, Handyman Services, Handyman Services, Inspirations, Painting & Decorating, Plastering & Drywall on Oct 12

Quite frequently, an older house may have a basement lying dormant. If the owner knows that it exists at all, then they often just fill it up with junk. Other basements are completely forgotten places, even though it would cost £100’s to build equivalent new space.

o The single most important point is access. If you cannot get to the basement from the house itself, the chances are that you will not use it properly, and may waste your money. A spiral staircase is a popular space-saving solution. If mobility is an issue, consider a conventional staircase with wheelchair-assist, or a mini-lift.

o Damp is another very important consideration. If you are in doubt, find a tradesman at Mr-Skill and ask for their estimation.

o Get rid off all the junk, and clean the basement out completely. Then paint everything white, including the floors and ceiling. Suddenly everything looks brighter and larger too, and you can begin to plan. At this stage, I recommend you consult a designer to get ideas.

o What shall you use the extra space for? A family room, a study or a pub? The possibilities are endless. Now draw up your plans, and have them approved by the local council before proceeding. Tradesmen in London will refuse to do a thing without this, because otherwise they know that they will be chasing moving targets. When you are ready to begin, do not take chances. Find a tradesman recommended by Mr Skill.

Remember to advise your insurer of the change and have your policy updated. After that, you can move your furniture in, and enjoy your bigger home.
