Before even setting out to Find a Kitchen Fitter on Mr-Skill to build your dream Kitchen, you need to ask yourself a few fundamental questions about how you work. This is because we are all made differently, and the Find a Kitchen Fitterfinest kitchen fitting expert is still no mind reader.

o Do you work from left to right, or from right to left? This makes a huge difference to positioning a sink in terms of draining board and vegetable preparation stations. It also indicates on which side of the cooker top you will need working space, and where you want your cooking utensils to hang.

o Do you like to cook on gas or electricity? The answer to that influences two things. The first is the cost of laying in the services, while the second determines the hob and oven combination best for you.

o Are you a baker or a fryer? Frequent frying implies a more expensive extraction system and excludes the possibility of storage above the stove. A baker on the other hand requires a more sophisticated oven.

Things to do at Home on a Cold Winter’s Weekend RSS

Posted in Handyman Services on Jan 25

Even by British standards the weather really has been awful so far this winter. With the year-end holidays behind us (and perhaps a quick flip to warmer climes for the lucky ones) the long slog continues through to that spring day when the crocuses and daffodils finally pop up through the never-ending snow. Tempers flare sometimes in cramped conditions stuck inside and watching telly – what about some handyman-related activities the whole family can share this weekend?

o For starters, how about tackling that cupboard under the stairs. I know things can get bad in there, but do you really need to find a handyman? Dad can lug out the heavy stuff while Mum makes two piles. The children have fun discovering what is waiting for them in the corner.

o After that, what about cleaning the inside window frames and glass? It can be fun looking at the snow outside and waving to the neighbours. Thanks heavens for double glazing or our fingers might stick to the frozen outer panes.

o If you are living in the City you could ask Handyman London Providers to send a fellow around to clean the outside glass as well. Personally I think it’s a miserable job to ask anybody to do, which is why I don’t think I’ll bother.

That’s enough work for the family to do next weekend I should think. If anybody has any further ideas may I suggest getting a handyman quote on Mr-Skill and staying out of trouble? Or else the family could send you outside to shovel snow!

A New Year’s Resolution – A New Kitchen in 2011 RSS

Posted in Kitchen Fitting on Dec 30

Why not blast off New Year 2011 with a new kitchen for the whole family to enjoy? Maybe when you bought your house you promised you would fix it, but never quite got round to it. Alternatively perhaps your kitchen just needs new cupboard doors and worktops – many people buy a new car every three years so why not apply this philosophy to kitchens too.

Go on, click on find a kitchen fitter and go straight to a list of rated tradespeople in your area on standby to assist you. Before you do so though, here is a short list of the most important thoughts you should consider:

o Do you want a central cooking area or one against the wall? With all the chaos involved in stripping out an old kitchen you may as well get it right at the same time too.

o If you have the room for it, include a family centre, or as least a breakfast nook where kids can gather after school for a snack and perhaps a spot of television. A modern kitchen is far more than just a space where Cook works – it is also the hub of many modern homes.

o Colour is often free, and you should take up the opportunity to make your personal statement with it. After all, are not different coloured floor laminates the same price, and does that not also apply to paints and ceramic tiles too? The sky’s the limit when you use your imagination – Kitchen Fitters London recommends searching Google Images using the keyword kitchen for fresh new ideas.

o To avoid disappointment you must have a budget for your kitchen upgrade. Bear in mind though that you are investing money in improving durable fixed property as opposed to buying consumer goods that may not last forever. A quality kitchen is often the deal maker in a home sale, while a cheap and shoddy upgrade may break the deal. Our advice is to do it properly, or wait until you can afford a decent job.

Did we inspire you to splash out on a new kitchen? You will be glad you did after the fuss and bother is all over. Your first step is to get kitchen fitter quotes on Mr-Skill. The next is to be bold, use your imagination and think out the box. Have fun, enjoy.

A New Year’s Resolution – Make your Home Your Castle RSS

Posted in Locksmith, Project Advice on Dec 28

New Year is the right time to implement plans to make your home safer for the whole family, and that includes making sure that you can all sleep peacefully at night too. This includes checking that the windows and doors all lock tightly, and that any alarm systems are working as they should. You also need to make sure you have spare keys inside the house in case somebody is trapped and needs to escape, and a spare back and front door key kept with a friendly neighbour, just in case too.

In case you were wondering how to do all this it’s really easy. Simply find a locksmith recommended by Mr-Skill to do it for you at a low, low rate. Before you start though, take a sober look at what is really necessary.

o Do all the locks turn easily? If not, try oiling them with a spray can and see if they improve. An old trick I learned when dealing with sticky Yale-type locks from a pal who once worked for Locksmiths London, is to oil the key and slide it in and out a few times to see if this may help. Remember to dry the key afterwards and to tell your partner what you did too – it not you may get dry-cleaning bills for dirty skirts and pockets.

o How secure really is each lock? If you could kick in a locked outside door it is time to get quotes for an upgrade. Don’t wait for trouble to happen before you take action here.

o How strong are the doors and windows themselves? There is no point in locking them if the hinges are weak or the panels and panes are paper-thin. Remember, security is a holistic subject and the weakest link commands the entire chain.

o Is it time to install a security alarm or upgrade an existing one? The secret to being secure is to be a tougher target than your neighbours – find out what they are doing and keep a jump ahead of them.

Now that you have thought about what you really need to do to make your Home your Castle, you could go ahead and get locksmith quotes from Mr-Skill. Does that sound like a good idea?

Have a Happy and Safety Conscious Christmas RSS

Posted in Cleaning Services on Dec 24

Christmas is the most fantastic time of the year for many. Family and friends gather from near and far and the house is often filled with the happy sounds of three generations again. But when this happens do we think about the unfamiliar safety hazards that may pop and plan for them? Do so, and you celebrate Christmas safely too.

o Are the grand kids coming over? If so, then maybe you need to find a housekeeper LOL. Remember that little children are made to be curious and are quite capable of getting into trouble. Keep the pots on the back rings of the hob, the safety net on the jacuzzi and the cat out of the cot and you have made a food start.

o Are the parents and in-laws coming to visit? If so, remember that their balance and eyesight may not be as good as yours, and that they could trip and fall where you would not have a problem. Play safe and do a check around the garden paths before they arrive.

o All the extra clutter in an overcrowded home can be a sure-fire recipe for tripping and injuries. Don’t spoil their fun, but do keep the place as tidy as you can.

o Watch those extra electric cables draped across the floor to Christmas Trees and other temporary electrical gadgets. Run them around the edge of the room rather – if this is not possible, cover them with a rug. Housekeepers London Incorporated even remove dangerous cables, although I personally think this is a little bit over the top.

o Be careful with decorative lights. Those with green colour coding on the box are suitable for indoor use only, and may never be used on a Christmas Tree whose needles have begun falling out. Do not leave them switched on when unattended.

o Finally, never overload wall sockets with too many plugs. If a plug or cable is warm to the touch you are overloading your lil’ ol’ house, and could be risking an electrical fire. Unplug a few rather than risk damaging electronic appliances.

o Of the subject of the perils of over-eating I could probably write a book. The good news is it is Christmas Day tomorrow and you can have your fill.

Mr-Skill wishes you a happy and safety conscious Christmas Day. If you can’t face the mess the following morning, you could always get housekeeper quotes from us instead. Have a good one.

Redecorating Made Easy RSS

Posted in Painting & Decorating on Oct 18

When done intelligently, and with an eye on what most other people want, redecorating can add pounds to the value of your home, and sometimes with very little effort too. This is one reason why Halifax PLC recently found that home redecorating is the United Kingdom’s most popular home improvement pastime.

People sometimes redecorate their homes with a view to a quick sale and then regret it when they move. Others do it just because this easy task is a great one for the whole family to share. The rest have better things to do and get decorator quotes on Mr-Skill instead.

If you choose to do a job yourself make sure that it is within your capabilities and that you have enough time to do it properly. It this is not the case, or if you fear for your safety on a high ladder do as people looking for painters in London do – play it safe and appoint a decorator to paint high ceilings.

Always make sure that you use the best materials and equipment too. Going cheap inevitably shows through the job and you will regret cutting corners. This means safe ladders, decent tools, and making sure that tiles, paints and wallpaper rolls are from the same batch. This is how professional home decorators achieve perfect results, as you will see when you find a decorator here.

When doing a redecorating job at home, always make sure that you protect your face and skin from the nasty chemicals that many paints and glues contain. Wear goggles and a facemask to protect your eyes and lungs, and a good pair of gloves to avoid getting blisters. When you do a job successfully around the house with the right materials, tools and equipment, you will have discovered why so many United Kingdom homeowners enjoy doing the same

Planning a New Kitchen RSS

Posted in Kitchen Fitting on Aug 24

The Kitchen is the most important part of any home, because that is where the family gathers in the afternoon after returning from work or school. For that reason a good kitchen is more than just a well-planned cooking center – it also needs to be a place where families meet and interact as well.

The first place to start is to find a kitchen fitter, who can advise you on how your services currently run. Some things like electricity points and water pipes can be fairly cheap to move – others for example drainage points may be fixtures. When you know what is possible, here is how you should plan your kitchen:

o Cook’s Zone

The cook is king or queen of the kitchen, and should have the best view of the television and the garden outside. Create the central preparation area in the lightest, brightest area in the room – after all, why should the cook settle for anything less?

If you are living in the city and are having difficulty finding kitchen fitters, London is an area where Mr-Skill specialises. A good kitchen trades person will understand the work flow between storage / preparation, cooking / serving and wash-up / garbage disposal areas, and advise what is best for you in terms of what you have to work with.

o Family Zone

The most efficient thing to do is to combine the breakfast nook with a family zone. This means making sure that the kids can do their homework there, and your partner can enjoy a welcome drink when they come home. That way the cook can share the news and action, and the family help to prepare the meal.

When you have decided what you want to do with your kitchen area, it is time to get several kitchen fitter quotes to make sure that what you pay is reasonable. A website like Mr-Skill knows the good ones in your area, so you can choose from several recommended ones there, who are not strangers.
