Something for a Handyman Every Day RSS

Posted in Handyman Services on Nov 16

I wish that I could to Find a Handyman on Mr-Skill for every weekend of the year. There are so many jobs waiting for me around the house, but the wife thinks that being busy keeps me fit and healthy. The more I say “we have the money” the more I’m told to get on with the work myself. So all that I can do is dream of what might otherwise have been.

First Weekend

Find a Handyman on Mr-SkillThe first job every month would be to deal with water run-offs. I’d have the gutters and downpipes cleared out and wiped down nicely. Then we’d rod out the storm-water drains and get rid of all weeds together. What a pleasure. Come on rain.

The Second Weekend

No doubt the weather would hold off now that the drains were cleared, so the next job would be to sort out the garage. Not even a pair of London Handymen would know exactly where to put things, so I guess my participation would be unavoidable

Weekend Number Three

There’s never been three rain-free weekends in the UK since time began or so I’m told. This time I think the handyman could wipe all the interior woodwork down, and get rid of all that mould. I’d get on with Find a Handyman on Mr-Skillsomething else nearby, just to keep an eye on things, if you know what I mean?

The Fourth Weekend

By then, of course we’d be quite a team. I’d know the other person’s skills and start getting extra mileage from their Handyman Quote. There’s nothing quite like having an extra pair of hands around the house, especially when it comes to carrying things.

In practice this would never happen, and if it did the wife would say “now what’s the point of Getting in a Handyman on Mr-Skill when you do half the work yourself’? Sometimes it seems that only another man would understand. Or did I perhaps overlook something in my haste?

Make a Simple Bamboo Wind Chime RSS

Posted in Carpentry & Joinery on Sep 24

Oftentimes the simplest things are the most enjoyable. Like a small child playing with a paper boat in a stream, or a couple walking hand-in-hand along a river bank. To me though, the gentle sound of a bamboo wind chime resonating gently in the garden is the best sound of all. The good news is that these delightful inventions are so easy to make, that there’s no need to Find a Joiner this time at all.

• Find a Carpenter on Mr-SkillObtain some lengths of bamboo from the hardware shop or garden centre. These need to be dry so that they resonate nicely, and be of different diameters too.

• Cut different lengths of bamboo from each source. There are two principles here. The diameter affects the depth of resonance or tone, while the length affects the pitch. Remember to ensure that there are no segments within the length you cut, or else the sound will not travel between the ends.

• Knock the lengths of bamboo together gently to check results. You can even tune them by adjusting lengths. Some pieces will work better against each other – these are the ones you need to juxtapose as some do at better London Joining Firms.

• Finish off your bamboo pieces with shaped lower ends like organ pipes. This is done by removing one-half of the last inch or so and tidying up. Some say this affects the pitch. Others like me just think it just looks better that way.

• Find a Carpenter on Mr-SkillDrill holes through the top ends for the hanger-strings. Remember to make these parallel to the bottom detail, so that these all present the same by facing outwards. Attach the strings ensuring they are of the same length, and tie the ends together neatly before hanging the set in an appropriate place that will catch the wind.

• Obtain a spreader disc of an appropriate diameter, and notch it deeply to receive the hanger strings. Set this in place between the strings and hey-presto you have a wooden wind chime. Finally, secure the strings to the spreader disc with hot-melt glue.

How’s that for a bit of fun for a Sunday’s home entertainment. And you don’t need Carpenter Quotes either. Although Mr-Skill is a serious business that matches clients and skilled tradesmen, we also like to give good ideas away. You can decorate your bamboo wind pipes any way you want. Did you notice how easy it is to rearrange the pipes.

Summer Jobs for the Builder RSS

Posted in General Building on Jun 14

Summer is a great time to get out in the garden, light the barbeque and prune the roses. Perhaps one could also hop into the car and brave the traffic all the way down to Brighton? Find a BuilderBut summer is also the right time to Find a Builder to catch up on the outdoor jobs while it’s not raining.

o Start with the roof and any chimneys first. Are the tiles or sheets still in good position and held tightly down? Check the flashing too, and double check for any signs of leaks by looking up at upstairs ceilings. And the gutters? Are they nice and clear too?

o Check the openings into buildings next – by this I mean the windows and the doors. Are they closing tightly and are all the locks and other fastenings working correctly too. This is not just about weatherproofing either. It’s about keeping burglars out as well.

o Go all the way around the house checking that the rainwater is still draining away nicely. Look for cracks in rendering and signs of damp rising up the walls. Go inside too, Find a Buildermoving furniture away from internal walls. Any signs of damp? You need to get a Building Quote before things get worse.

o A Builder in London I got chatting too the other day while waiting for a train back home remarked that gates and fences are like our teeth. By that he meant that some of us neglect them both until they start to give us trouble, at which point they cost a lot of money to repair.

I reckon that chap standing with me on a railway platform had exactly the right idea. We need to keep a hand on homes and fix the little things before they become expensive. Summer is the best time to do this while it’s still nice and warm. Unless, that is, you feel like stopping gaps while the winter rains fall down on you. I just thought I’d mention it, to keep you nice and warm and dry.

Why Use a Handyman At All? RSS

Posted in Handyman Services on May 30

I have several friends who call in a Handyman from time to time even when they could do the job themselves. In fact one of them is a builder and another is extremely good with her hands. I decided to Find a Handymanask around and find reasons why people like this still prefer to Find a Handyman, and this is what I found.

o Not enough time to do the job. This was a common reason and I suppose it makes good sense too. Most of us are busy in this frenetic world, and when we come home from work or business we would perhaps prefer to just relax.

o It’s a dirty job was yet another popular reason and I must agree here. My youngest son is a motor mechanic yet he does not service his own car. I have to sympathise. I was an electrician once but now I am tired of climbing ladders.

o Find a HandymanI’d rather be playing golf (or bowls or tennis) is another popular alibi I heard quite frequently. This one makes sense to me too. After all, if one can afford to pay to have the work done, why not choose between a pair of Handyman Quotes and enjoy Saturday afternoon off instead.

o The one I liked the most was I’d like to help the youngster out (but not out of charity) and I especially liked it too. Many of us started out in life doing odd-jobbing, and have a debt to repay by helping others now.

Did I give you sufficient reasons to Look for a Handyman on Mr-Skill? I really hope so, because it may improve the quality of your lifestyle while helping somebody else as well. That is reason enough for me to pass the favour on to another well-deserving person.

Nurture your Home Handyman RSS

Posted in Handyman Services on Apr 29

If you have a handy person at home who enjoys tinkering with things in their spare time then you are doubly blessed. Nurture your Home HandymanFirstly, you do not need to get a Handyman Quote for every little detail. Secondly, you have a partner who prefers to stay at home with you.

What, however makes them tick? Why are they happily handy that way? How should you keep them content, and your home in tip-top condition at the same time?

Firstly, a handyperson is a restless soul who needs work for idle hands to do. They will seldom admit this though. You need to play along with this pretence and sympathise with all the extra tasks that they keep on taking on, without even suggesting that you could Find a Handyman instead.

Nurture your Home HandymanSecondly, unlike some Handymen in London in years gone by they actually enjoy their work, and take a pride in it too. So overlook the bent nail or two, and kiss a few bruised thumbs instead. You will also get more mileage in that way.

Thirdly, and finally, they do the work for you, their partner, and they feel insulted when you suggest bringing in a hired hand to help. To them, this is almost as bad as them suggesting going out to buy Kentucky Chicken when you have already started preparing the evening meal.

So spare a thought for the dedicated handy people all across the United Kingdom. In villages, on farms and in our great cities too, nor forgetting the one in your own home. Love them, nurture them and appreciate them as they tackle their next job with all the stubborn determination of a modern Winston Churchill, plus a few muttered thoughts on the side.

Step 1 – Strip out the Old Kitchen RSS

Posted in Kitchen Fitting on Feb 03

Stripping out an old Kitchen is not the most pleasant way to spend a Saturday. This is because you will be surprised at the old filth that you can find and could pick up a nasty badly infected cut too. For this reason we recommended that you wear stout clothing, a pair of good boots, heavy duty gloves and a face mask. I know that Harry’s Kitchen Fitters in London insist that their staff disinfect their hands and faces after every job. Doesn’t appeal to you? Rather Find a Kitchen Fitter on Mr-Skill. If you are game, read on.

o Make sure that you have everything you need for your replacement Kitchen before you start, that you have inspected it and that nothing is missing, damaged or broken.

o Set up a temporary Kitchen in another room where you can make a cup of tea and heat take
aways in the microwave.

o Clear everything out of the kitchen cupboards, and I do mean everything. If you don’t want it, de-clutter it and chuck it away.

o Turn off the electricity and water and have a Gas Safe technician isolate the gas. Remove all appliances so that just the cabinets are left.

o Remove all doors and drawers and store them neatly outside in the yard. Find out how the worktops are attached (usually with screws from underneath) and remove them to the yard too. Try to remove the sections intact – believe me this is quicker that ending up with a pile of dirty, dusty scrap

Are you sweating at the thought of all this work? Either get a Kitchen Fitter Quote or read on.

o Remove the floor-standing cabinets. If you are lucky these were assembled in sections and you just need to separate them from each other and the wall. If your home is very old though they may have been built up on site. In that case, forget about what I said about removing them intact and use a wrecking bar (mind the wall). Remove the upper cabinets in the same way. You will need help with this because they can be fairly heavy.

o Finally remove the wall tiles and the floor covering (unless the latter is still firmly in position and can be covered over with flexible flooring or tiles)

After you have stored all the scrap tidily outside in the yard (I am a nag but you will appreciate the thought tomorrow) give the Kitchen a thorough clean so you have a clear start in the morning. If you have any energy left over, wash it down with sugar soap followed by a mild disinfectant. You have decided you need help with this after all? No problem. Contact Mr-Skill.

Workshop Safety RSS

Posted in Carpentry & Joinery on Dec 13

There are always small woodworking jobs to do around the home, and the advent of power tools has made this easier. Unfortunately, power tools when used unwisely can also harm– when you take the following advice, and wear the correct safety gear too, you should improve your chances of avoiding injury. Of course, you should be able to avoid harm completely when you find a carpenter on Mr-Skill

o Before you start, inspect for electrical safety. Are all connections tight, and are all cables in perfect condition? If yes and the premises are protected by earth leakage too, it should be safe to start.

o Use sharp tools only. That way you reduce the risk of a cutting edge grabbing and catching you by surprise. Other advantages of using tools in good condition are that the job goes quicker and the finished job looks more professional too.

o You should think about your hands continuously, and what could happen to them if a tool slips unexpectedly. Could your hand collide with a hard object, or worse still, be lacerated by a cutting tool? Although in theory, this is impossible when you use a power tool correctly with the right safety guards in place, the important thing is never to become casual, and watch your spare hand too

o Carpenters in London who I know insist that their apprentices stand in a position where that they cannot injure their faces in the same way either. A good rule of thumb here is, if it could happen, stop the job and think again.

o Before engaging any power tool, check that you are standing safely. This means a firm footing and leaning comfortably in the direction of your work. If your back starts playing up or you start getting cramps, switch off and find a better way to work.

Finally, never attempt a job that is to big for you, and for which you do not have the rights tools and safety gear. Think safe. Think Mr-Skill. Get carpenter quotes free there.
