Caring for Paint Brushes RSS

Posted in Painting & Decorating on Dec 02

Good paint brushes are worth the price, although they nevertheless cost a surprising amount of money these days. If you choose not to Find a Painter to do the work for you on Mr-Skill, then you can extend the life of your paintbrushes – and experience the pleasures of working with a well run-in brush, by following these simple tips:

  • Find a Painter on Mr-SkillLondon Painters know the trick of moistening the brush right through with the cleaning medium that they plan to use later, which could be water, turpentine or a specialized liquid. This prevents the brush fibres from absorbing the paint, saving you money, and making cleaning a pleasure later too.
  • Don’t dip the brush so deeply in the paint that the heart fills with paint too. This space is there to provide flexibility in the head, not to act as a reservoir for generating paint spills.
  • Work the brush back and forth against the job. This not only provides a better finish, it also helps the brush maintain its shape.
  • After you have thoroughly cleaned the used paintbrush using the appropriate cleaning medium, squirt a dollop of dishwashing fluid into the heart of the brush and work it through to the outside with http://www.mr-skill.co.uk/jobs/painting-and-decorating/your fingers. Rinse clean under running water making sure it comes clear on the inside too, and then lightly flick the brush dry somewhere where you can stand a little mess.
  • Finally, reshape the damp paintbrush with your fingers, and leave it somewhere suitable to dry. That way, it will be perfectly ready for you when you need it next.

If this sounds like too much work for you, then you could always Get Painting Quotes on Mr-Skill instead. You’ll be surprised at the quality of their work, and the amount of money that you could save when you use our painters, compared to general market rates.

Change the Kitchen Sink Tap RSS

Posted in Plumbing, Heating & Gas on Oct 24

The kitchen truly is at the heart of every home, and if you think about it the sink tap is at its core. First thing in the morning we use it to fill the kettle. Last thing at night we rinse the dirty dishes. Cook uses it at least a dozen times a day. The family gathers around it to do the washing up.

Find a Plumber on Mr-SkillThere are some really handsome kitchen taps around these days. Why not Find a Plumber and spoil yourself with a new one. If you are thinking of doing it yourself, then here’s what’s involved.

1. Isolate the hot and cold water supply, making sure the flow stops completely. Position a bucket beneath the tap under the sink.

2. Loosen off the nut that holds the tap in place. London Plumbers always travel with a basin wrench – if the nut is hard to get at, you’ll know why.

3. Disconnect the flexible water lines connecting the tap to the water supply at the lower end. Be careful not to strain the piping. As you remove the couplings a little water will flow out. Make sure the bucket is in place before you do!

4. Remove the old tap complete with the flexible pipes attached. Clean the sink surface thoroughly where the old tap rested. Take your time to do this properly. Apply a Find a Plumber on Mr-Skillgenerous bead of plumbers putty around the hole in the surface of the sink, and gently bed the rubber gasket into it.

5. Insert the new tap assembly through the hole including the flexible water lines. Locate the fixing nut, position the tap, and tighten the nut firmly. Attach the pipes to the water supply remembering to be generous with plumber’s tape.

6. Re-tighten the nut that secures the tap as it will have bedded down. Remove the surplus putty that squeezed out and clean the sink top thoroughly. Turn on the water and test the tap. No leaks? You’ve earned a cup of tea and a biscuit too!

Sound’s easy, doesn’t it? But there are various things that could go wrong, resulting in water leaks that could ruin expensive kitchen cabinetry. Why not get a Plumber’s Quote on Mr-Skill instead? You’ll save pounds off normal rates, and could still enjoy that cup of tea and biscuit.

Replace a Damaged Floor Board RSS

Posted in Tiling & Flooring on Jul 19

A wooden strip floor is a thing of almost ageless beauty if properly maintained, and can add thousands of pounds in value to a period home too. Unfortunately, there was a post-war period when valuable floors were covered over and horribly neglected. Find a Flooring ContractorIf you have the patience a home repair is possible. If not, you can Find a Flooring Contractor nearby you, right here.

The first challenge is to find a matching strip, or strips. There are places in the City where salvage flooring is stored away, although only London Flooring Specialists know of these, and I doubt very much whether they will pass the knowledge on to you. In olden times floor planks were cut from the hearts of trees for extra strength and were close grained. These days, softer outside wood is used with broader grain and a lighter finish. This leaves two choices – either scour the demolition sites yourself, or bite the bullet and shuffle the floor planks in your home as necessary.

Removing a plank is not that difficult, once you discover that the trick is to carefully cut through the tongues and grooves on both sides of the affected plank, taking care not to spread the damage as you do. After that make Find a Flooring Contractorseveral long diagonal cuts, and pick away at the remains until you have cleared it away completely, and removed all the nails.

Prepare the replacement board for a precise nudge fit, removing any tongue and groove before you size it. Drill a few holes through it, and attach twine to nails on the bottom side, so you have a way to pull it out again if it gets stuck. When you are quite satisfied, epoxy glue it in position and hold it down with bricks while the glue is drying, definitely no nails required here.

This can be a fun job for the enthusiast on a rainy Saturday afternoon, but the cause of family conflict if things to not work out right. Another alternative could be to get some Flooring Quotes on Mr-Skill, and leave the job, and the frustrations to the experts.

Child First Aid for Electric Shock RSS

Posted in Electrical Work on Apr 07

Electricity is always looking for a place to go to ground. Because our bodies are 95% water, they make excellent conductors. Do not play games with this dangerous modern convenience. This is because electricity is a killer. Rather get instead.

Electrician Quotes Electric ShockAs adults, we know enough to turn off mains before working on electricity, yet mistake still happen. Hopefully we remember to wear insulated shoes and keep one hand behind our backs to prevent a shock going through out hearts – but what about our children when we are not at home?

There is only one cure and that is prevention. The only answer is to unplug every appliance with an exposed element before we leave the house. But, what happens when a child removes a light bulb and explores live contact points with little fingers. What must we do? Even an Electrician from London could not prevent that from happening.

  • Do not touch your child. You could be shocked and become unable to help further. Turn off the electricity at the mains. If this is not possible, push your child away from the source of shock with something non-conductive, like a wooden broom.
  • Check that your child is breathing by feeling for a pulse under the jaw while resting your hand gently on their chest. If breathing has stopped completely apply CPR. If it is intermittent or shallow, do not do so. Comfort the child while calling for professional help.
  • In every case regardless of the outcome, do not scold your child. Explain what happened, and how to avoid it happening again in future. Then book an appointment with a doctor immediately.

Prevention is always better than cure. This includes knowing how to do CPR for different age groups, and resolving to Find an Electrician to do electrical work around your home instead. Let’s make safety first.
