A beautiful modern bathroom is not only pleasant on the eye – it’s going to add real value to your home too. Experts say that when it comes to selling property quickly, buyers put new bathrooms and kitchens at the top of their wish lists. The Mr-Skill website is a good place to find a bathroom fitter, because we screen all our members before we accept them.
Here then, are four easy steps to getting your bathroom upgraded:
Why not check with Mr-Skill before you accept a quotation – our members are offering incredible bargains right now, and you could save up to 25% on normal prices!
Firstly – Measure your existing bathroom and record the layout on a sketch. Of course, you don’t have to follow the existing set-up with your new bathroom. However it is important to understand the existing piping arrangements, as it can save pounds if you don’t need a major refit of the plumbing too.
Take your plan with you when you visit bathroom-fitting shops in your area. The purpose of this is to get ideas in terms of what would look nice for you, and how much it would cost. Good bathroom-fitting shops will be only too pleased to help with free designs. Remember to ask your supplier if their tradespersons are criminal records bureau checked, and that they are registered and qualified and gas safe accredited too.
Secondly – A home survey is next on the list, and it will enable your preferred supplier to fully discuss and understand your requirements. From the survey, you will receive a bathroom fitting quotation, which you need to review carefully before signing agreement. Remember to request any changes in writing. One of our regular London bathroom fitters advises you to ask about special offers before finally accepting.
Thirdly – Stripping out your old bathroom and installing your new one requires a little forward planning. How long will it take? Do you have a second bathroom to use during renovations? Who’s responsible for rubble removal, and for the final clean up too?
Finally – Assuming that everything goes to plan, you need to know about the guarantee for the workmanship and the bathroom fittings as well. Don’t be shy to ask, because the completed job needs to be just like your hard earned money – and that’s perfect!

A home handyman’s life is never easy what with the skills they patch up as they go along and you-know-who in the background complaining about the slightest bit of dust. Before you tear your hair out in frustration here are a Ten Top Tips to make your life a little easier. Still sorry you took on that difficult job? No worries – just ask Mr-Skill for a handyman quote.
1. Never build on a weak foundation. That includes not covering a loose floor, or tiling directly onto vinyl. If your surface preparation is dodgy, so will be the finished job.
2. Look after your notes. Don’t scrunch them up in your pocket of trample them on the floor. Write your measurements neatly on a piece of paper and pin them up where you will be working with prestik or something similar.
3. An old man I know who has retired from being a Handyman in London still always carries a magnet in his pocket. I do so too these days, ever since I dropped a tiny nut and bolt into a shaggy carpet.
4. To drive a tiny screw into a hard-to-reach hole attach it to a screwdriver with prestik or masking tape. Tapping in a pilot hole with a hammer and a nail can turn a nightmare into a dream job.
5. If you come across a screw that is locked in tight try heating the screw head with a soldering iron – sometimes this works and the screw comes out a whole lot easier.
6. A badly rusted nut and bolt will separate easily after you soak what you can see with (can you believe it) coca-cola. Give this time to soak in for a few days before applying spanner pressure.
7. Extension leads are the bane of my life as I am always tripping over them. Before you break a leg and need to Find a Handyman put a few temporary hooks in the wall and drape the extension cord between them.
8. When mixing plaster add the plaster to the water and not the other way around to avoid creating lumps. It will spread a great deal smoother too.
9. Keep a box with you for storing the tools you are using regularly on a job and stop spending your time looking for the hammer or the screwdriver. A smaller box inside it for tiny things is a great time-saver too.
10. When measuring make sure the tape is between the two closest points. This means keeping it level and between two points the same distance from the corner of the room.
These are just a few more good ideas from Mr-Skill, the homeowner’s friend. Aren’t you pleased you found our website?

The power rating of air-conditioning equipment in the UK is based on the units´ capacity for cooling a volume of a given size. This power rating is represented in the form of British Thermal Units (BTUs), and an accurate calculation is required to ensure that you purchase the right air-conditioning system to efficiently cool your home. Get the calculation wrong, and you will either have an air-conditioning system that fails to cope with the demands of a hot sunny day, or you will have spent money unnecessarily on a system which leaves the air feeling clammy due to high relative humidity. If you have a mental block with mathematics or cannot get accurate measurements for any reason, contact one of the local tradesmen in our Tradesmen´s Directory, who will be happy to come round and do the calculations with you.
To calculate the number of BTUs your air-conditioning units needs to have, you need to work out the heat load that your air-conditioning has to cool. Make each of the following calculations individually and then combine them to get a sub-total.
Room Volume – Measure the length, width and height (in feet) of each room to be air-conditioned and multiply them together – eg. 13´3” x 10`6” x 9´0” (13.25 x 10.5x 9) – and then multiply the answer by 6.
Occupants – We give off heat too. So, for everybody who regularly uses the room, add 400.
You should end up with a sub-total from those two calculations of between 4000 (for small rooms) and 12000 (for large lounge/diners). Thereafter add 15% if the room is a South-facing living room, deduct 10% if you have cavity wall insulation and double glazing, and add a further 20% if the living room has patio doors or French windows which are not double glazed.
Other factors you may have to consider include if you room has a considerable amount of high voltage lighting (although it would be recommended to switch to Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs) or electrical equipment. If you are considering installing an air-conditioning unit in a kitchen, you should seek professional advice from one of our highly rated tradesmen, as a large number of variable factors will have to be included depending on the number of kitchen appliances and their respective energy efficiency.
Once you know which air-conditioning system to go out and buy, use the “Post-a-Job” facility to find a local tradesman who will install it for you at the best possible price.
