Choosing a Moving Company RSS

Posted in Moving Homes & Hauliers, Moving Homes & Hauliers on Apr 27

Moving home is a stressful business, so you need to manage the potential pain and trauma by planning wisely. This applies especially to the moving company you decide to use – you must be totally happy with your selection. A good start with any relocation is to find a mover as soon as possible, so that you can continue with all the other activities that will need to happen. It is imperative that moving companies visit you in your home to properly understand your needs. Only then, can they quote properly for the move itself. Find a mover on Mr-Skill

Planning the Move

Relocation can be down the street, to a neighbouring town, across country or even abroad. Each has its own considerations and you need to listen carefully to the advice any good mover should provide. It’s all part of their business, and they should understand your specific needs – and the best way of transporting you and your possessions to your destination.

Charges

Make sure that you fully understand the quotation, and ask the sales representative to explain anything you don’t understand. The charges applying are going to depend on the size of your household, and the number of items needing moving. Then, the mover will also need to know whether their team is to pack for you, and then unpack once they have your goods at your new home. There could be additional charges too if you require storage facilities for your goods, between moving out of your old home and into the new one.

Insurance

It certainly pays to look for the best cover to suit your specific needs, but don’t skimp because you may regret it later. When it comes to your removalist quote, ask for details and costs of insurance cover as well. Then, read through and understand the policy wording carefully. If you have any concerns, seek clarification, and insist that any changes to the insurance manifesto be confirmed in writing. Find a mover on Mr-Skill

Accreditation

Check that the moving company you plan to use is registered with the relevant industry body, and has full current membership too. Bill, our London mover of many years standing, says that you must be adamant, and appoint a reputable moving company. He goes on to offer this sensible advice: “Don’t trust all your worldly possessions to a cowboy, because you will be taken for a ride!” And, it’s a good idea to check the authenticity of any testimonials too!

DIY? London Man-with-a-Van? London Removal Expert? RSS

Posted in Moving Homes & Hauliers on Aug 20

When you have found a new home to move to, one of the big decisions is whether to take on the job of moving home yourself, or employ the services of a London Man-with-a-Van or a London removal company to help you. There are pros and cons of each option, and here we look at some of the reasons both for and against.

Do-it-Yourself?

Trying to move too economically can present its own problems!

The two biggest perceived advantages of moving home by yourself are the amount of money you may save and the fact that you could possibly stretch your move over several days if the opportunity exists. To make moving home a little easier, you can rope in a few friends for the price of a meal, and being able to take your time and move your possessions over a few days or couple of weekends is a bit of a luxury. However, if you only have a small car you are going to have to hire a van and there are a couple of things you should take into consideration before doing this.

  • Hiring a decent sized transit van could set you back up to £100 a day and if you intend to hire anything larger than a Box Van, you will need to have a C1 driving licence.
  • Secondly, if you are moving home far away, you will have to pay a premium for one way van rental.
  • Thirdly, you are going to have to move all your belongings yourself!

London Man-with-a-Van?

Make sure that your Man-with-a-Van has got a suitable vehicle!

Using the services of a London Man-with-a-Van is really handy if you have smaller amounts of belongings to move. The extra pair of hands is an advantage and a London Man-with-a-Van is not that expensive for short journeys as you normally pay by the hour. There is quite a lot of competition amongst Man-with-a-Van companies in London as you will see if you look in our Tradesmen´s Directory and you should be able to get a good choice of quotes from men-with-a-van in London by using our “Post-a-Job” facility. However …

  • A London Man-with-a-Van may not be able to provide a large enough van to move everything you need in one go – making return trips that much more expensive.
  • You need to check that they are fully insured for transporting the value of your goods (They won´t be offended if you ask).
  • If you are moving a long distance, a London Man-with-a-Van may want to charge you for the time he is driving back to London with an empty van.

London Removal Experts?

Many hands make light work, but you will pay for it in the end!

London removal experts are probably far more suitable for a larger move. Removal companies in London will normally be able to supply packing cases and materials in advance of your move to help you prepare for moving day and usually turn up with a team of removal men to help load your belongings and unload them at the other end. Normally they should charge from the time they turn up at your old home until the time they depart from your new home and inasmuch as they move people for a living and are very experienced, removal companies have their downside too!

  • If three or four men are on site to help you load and unload, your costs of moving home will increase dramatically.
  • You may find that you have to move to fit in with their schedules rather move than at a time that would be more convenient to you.
  • Because of health and safety regulations, removal men will not be able to help you if you have heavy items you want moved from areas with restricted access – such as a loft.

When moving home there are advantages and disadvantage connected with all three alternatives. The one you choose will be the one most suitable for the scale and distance of your move. However, you can be sure of getting the most competitive quotes from London Man-with-a-Van companies and removal experts in London if you use the “Post-a-Job” facility at the top of the page. You may also consider taking on part of the job yourself, in which case our “Top Tips for Moving Home” will be of interest to you.

Top Tips for Moving Home RSS

Posted in Moving Homes & Hauliers on Aug 20

Moving Home can be a stressful or stress-free experience depending on how you approach it. The more preparation you put into before the day of your move, the smoother it will go. Mr Skill, with the help of the London removal experts featured in our Tradesmen´s Directory, has compiled a list of handy tips to help moving home be a pleasure rather than a chore.

Start by writing everything down. Compile a manual file which is going to be used as a record keeping system where you can list every box as it is packed, and details of what is inside it. Create a space in your home to use as a “command centre” and keep the file there so you know where to lay your hands on it. Not only will it come in handy when you arrive at your new destination, but if you have packed an item which you subsequently need before you move, you will know where to find it!

Get more packing supplies than you think you need. It always seems that no matter how many boxes, bubble wrap and sticky tape you get, there is always the need for more. If more than one person is packing, get two long rolls of sticky tape and two pairs of scissors, so that one person is not hanging around waiting while you seal your boxes up. Small boxes should be used for more delicate items and then packed into larger boxes. It is a good idea to take a selection of strong cardboard boxes from your local supermarket, because you never know exactly what sizes you are going to need until you start packing.

Assign a colour code for each room in your new home (Kitchen – Yellow, Bathroom – Blue etc) and stick sticky labels of that colour onto each packing box. This will help your local removals company get the lorry unpacked quicker on your arrival and you will not finding yourself hunting through your new home looking for items in every room.

Empty wardrobes and fill them up. Wardrobes are great storage spaces for bedding, cushions and other lightweight soft furnishings. Pack them tightly into the bottom of the wardrobe and then fill with jeans, jumpers, shoes and finally clothes that you will not be using over the next couple of days. Cover any light coloured clothes with a dry-cleaning bag or large plastic shopping bag and pack a separate suitcase with items you will need in the short term.

Keep things together. Computer and audio equipment should be packed with their appropriate power leads and connecting cables. Picture hooks should be removed from the wall as you take down your pictures and sellotape to the back of the pictures and if you are going to disassemble furniture to take with you, keep the screws and screw covers packed with them.

Plan your cleaning. You will no doubt have some last minute cleaning to do before you leave. It is a good idea to leave as many cleaning tools as you need in a separate box away from the rest of the packing. Use supermarket shopping bags instead of waste paper baskets and throw away old cleaning clothes when you leave.

Take valuables with you. Although London removal companies will be experienced in handling valuable items, and have insurance in case of breakages, there will be several personal items which can never be replaced due to their sentimental value. It is always best to pack them securely in the vehicle you will be travelling in to prevent the risk of mishaps.

Take paperwork with you. Items such as passports, birth certificates, bank statements and personal phone books should also be taken with you. It is not so much that these are irreplaceable, just a nuisance to replace when you have so many things to do in your new home.

Tell everyone that you are moving. This means cancelling papers, re-directing post, cancelling utility standing orders with the bank, advising insurance and pension companies that you are moving, the DVLA and anybody else you has your home address details. Let them all have your new address in good time to amend their records. You may even find some “Welcome to Your New Home” cards waiting for you when you arrive.

Enjoy your new home. If the preparation has gone well, the move will be smooth and you will arrive at your new address stress-free and looking forward to settling in. With the colour-coded boxes in their correct room, unpacking will be a breeze and you will get it done quicker and easier than you could have ever imagined.

One of the main things to consider when moving home is who to use to help you move your belongings. Mr Skill has a selection of highly recommended expert removal companies in London listed in its Tradesmen´s Directory.  We recommended that you get several moving home quotes from hauliers in London in order to get the best deal. You can simply do this by using the “Post-a-Job” facility at the top of the page – and good luck with the move!

New Driving Regulations to affect Haulage Drivers RSS

Posted in Moving Homes & Hauliers on Aug 20

The Department for Transport (DfT) in conjunction with the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) and Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) are introducing new driving regulations for lorry drivers that will affect removal companies in London when they are implemented as part of new European requirements on driver testing, training, examination and licensing which come into force in 2013.

At present, London removals drivers of medium-sized and large buses and lorries need to renew their licences every five years once they reach the age of 45. Over-45s also need to demonstrate their fitness to drive through a full medical report. From 2013, under-45s who drive these vehicles will also need to confirm medical fitness and renew their licence every five years.  However, under-45s will not require a full medical report and will still only need to renew their photograph every 10 years. All other drivers and riders will continue to renew their driving licences every 10 years as is currently the case.

Noel Shanahan, Chief Executive of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency which is responsible for the administration of driver licences and vehicle registration, said:

“The UK haulage and bus industry operate to high levels of safety and the vast majority of drivers in the industry already ensure that they are fit to drive and notify the DVLA if they have any concerns.  This new measure will provide an additional reminder but we are proposing to introduce this in a way that minimises the impact on drivers.”

Additional regulations still to be confirmed will also be applied to light van drivers who tow trailers – most likely to affect London man-with-a-van operations. The proposals are that drivers will be allowed to tow slightly larger trailers than they can currently on a normal car driving licence (Category B) if they take a further test or undergo training although new restrictions will apply to the overall size of the vehicle/trailer combination that can be driven on a category B+E licence.

If you want to find a removal expert to help you with moving home, please consult our Tradesmen´s Directory for an excellent source of highly rated tradesmen in London. When moving home it is advisable to get several moving home quotes, as prices can vary on the distance you are moving and the number of hands required.
