Plastering Terms RSS

Posted in Plastering & Drywall on Jun 18

When you receive your Plastering Quotes from Mr-Skill you may possibly be a tad confused by some of the terms they use. Find a PlastererThey do so in an effort to describe exactly what they propose to do, and we thought it could be helpful to provide some definitions.

o Coving is the art of filling in the joints between walls and ceilings. This may be done with raw plaster, or prefabricated cornices also known as architraves. Some Plastering Jobs in London involve skilful repairs to decorative coving that may be centuries old already.

o Float and Set is a technique for applying a basic render to a raw wall that may be later finished off or even tiled.

o Plasterboarding is the same as Drywalling and refers to the installation of large gypsum sheets to walls and ceilings for skimming by others later.

o Find a PlastererRendering is a cement-based plaster applied to the outside walls of buildings. When used in conjunctions with small stones it is called Pebble Dash.

o Skimming is a more refined technique used to finish off inside walls more smoothly. It can be painted or tiled later, or may alternatively already contain a pigment.

Armed with this information you could Find a Plasterer on Mr-Skill with greater confidence. They will appreciate it when you describe your requirements in words that they understand too.

External Plastering Techniques RSS

Posted in Plastering & Drywall on May 31

In days gone past plastering over exterior walls was popular because it covered crooked surfaces and helped with waterproofing too. It is less popular these days though, because it is labour-intensive to Find a Plasterermaintain as opposed to face-bricks. If you own an older home then you may also own one with exterior plastered walls. In this case the chances are that these will need repairing from time to time, meaning that you could need to Find a Plasterer.

Stucco Plaster otherwise known as Rendering was commonly used during the 19th Century when it was composed primarily of lime. These days cement is more often used to apply one of several different qualities of finish:

o Common Stucco aims to produce a surface that is as smooth and even as possible

o Rough Stucco is more uneven and is scribed with lines to imitate bricks or stonework

o Find a PlastererStucco may also be dyed with pigments to produce a permanently tinted effect. Great care must be taken when mixing to ensure a consistent hue.

RoughCast or Pebbledash is a cruder external plastering solution that requires a lower skill level and is cheaper to apply.

o In DryDash, pebbles or gravel are pressed into wet plaster to create a rustic effect.

o WetDash uses a slightly different technique whereby a mixture of aggregate and plaster is towelled over as a top coat.

Before choosing between Plastering Quotes make sure that you know what the contractor envisages, and ask to see samples of similar work previously done. Plastering is an art-form that develops through experience, not just after training.

What to Do with Pebble Dash RSS

Posted in Planning & Consulting on Mar 20

When World War II was over and service men returned home, they found a different England from the one they left behind. Many homes had been destroyed by bombs, Pebble Dashmore bricklayers and plasterers had been killed, and demand for houses went through the roof. A cheaper way was needed to finish off shoddily-built exterior walls quickly, and that was when pebble dash went into mode.

That plasterer’s art – for indeed it is when properly done which was often not the case – consists of applying rendering over wire mesh attached to a frame tied to the wall, and then forcing pebbles into it. This had the effective of concealing crooked brickwork quickly and cheaply, and concealing other defects too.

While popular and considered stylish at the time, pebble dash these days is associated with tatty council housing, and most who have it wish that they never did. Here are a few options you may like to consider if in fact you do.

o Although a time-consuming job many pebble dashed homes have been given a relatively modern look by simply painting the walls a popular colour over an appropriate bonding undercoat.

o Pebble DashIn theory it is possible to Find a Plasterer to apply a skim coat to pebble dash. A skilled artisan doing a Plastering Job in London will always remove a test section first, just to make double sure the rendering is firm enough after the rumbling of heavy trucks to take the extra weight.

o The correct way, of course, is to call for Plastering Quotes to remove the pebble dash and reinstate with standard render – although the most expensive by far, this is the sound long-term advice we recommend.

Have you made up your mind what you are going to do? The next step is to find a reliable plasterer you can trust on Mr-Skill.

Removing Pebble Dash RSS

Posted in Plastering & Drywall on Oct 27

Pebble Dash is essentially a plastering mix with small stones and even some shells added to create the effect of a pebbly beach. It covers up a host of defects too. This is why it became popular in the early 1920’s when soldiers and sailors returned home from the war to find a plasterer, but found so few young men left who knew how to build properly instead.

In those days, builders used Pebble Dash so frequently on shoddily built new houses that it became a statement complementing the chic effect of a new home. People even added Pebble Dash to existing houses that did not need repairs, to upgrade them to modern standards. As a result, it became almost impossible to get plasterer quotes for any other form of rendering for years.

Because Pebble Dash looks so old-fashioned now, it has become a complete turn-off to modern buyers. I doubt whether it would be possible to find any plasterers in London who even have the skill. If you are upgrading it may be a good idea to strip the Pebble Dash away and find a plasterer to apply new rendering.

The costs involved in removing the Pebble Dash depend largely on whether it applies directly to the brickwork, or to a wire mesh that usually peels off quite easily. Before you accept any plasterer quotes, first make sure which application applies to your home. A rated plasterer on Mr-Skill should insist on doing a small test before firming up on price. If the price is too high for you, you could always plant wisteria on a trellis,
