Choosing the Right Electric Drill for the Home Plumber RSS

Posted in Plumbing, Heating & Gas on Jul 04

These days an amazing variety of different power drills are available for different jobs, and homeowners often wonder about the necessity of getting Plumber Quotes at all. Trust me, Find a Plumberone burst pipe above the bedroom ceiling on Christmas Eve cured me of any further desire to tackle advanced plumbing jobs again – and then I still had to endure criticism and Find a Plumber too.

This is not to say that small plumbing jobs are beyond the reach of the average home handy girl or handy man. I’m thinking here of plumbing-in a washing machine or extending a garden tap. Both will inevitably involve making holes through which pipes will pass, or where screws will hold things down. The question is, which electric drill is best?

Plug-in drills are available in a wide variety of power ratings and their price varies accordingly. I don’t see much point in buying down, and I have left a few worked-out drills behind me to prove the point. So buy something decent in the 600W power range with a name that you can trust, and that’s not made in an obscure country either.

I dislike the clutchless drills so popular these days. True, there is no chuck key to lose, but equally there is a fair chance of chucks locking up or not tightening Find a Plumberproperly. A sales clerk once thoughtlessly remarked that my hands were getting old. My response included buying elsewhere and never shopping there again.

A cordless drill with re-chargeable battery is a handy tool to have around the house, and I would personally not be without one. What they may lack in power is compensated for by their convenience. However please forget about drilling into brick or concrete using one. I have yet to see a professional Plumber in London using one either, which says a lot in itself.

Before choosing an electric drill I recommend you first hold it in your hand. Is it well-balanced? Does it feel right? Does the chuck work easily? Finally, make sure that the motor speed is both variable, and reversible (for stuck bits) and that there is an impact option too. A power drill should be a reliable friend for life – choose yours carefully.

Bathroom Taps – Designer Statements RSS

Posted in Plumbing, Heating & Gas on Apr 27

A bathroom, my Grand-Mama always said is a thing that never changes. While she was young they probably never did, Bathroom Taps and I doubt she ever had a London Plumbing Job done for all the years she lived in Chelsea. These days of course things are very different, and taps are sometimes more designer statements than functional successes.

Did you lie awake last night and think about a waterfall cascading into the bath? Well you could have one of those too, although I doubt you could stick your big toe into it, or whether, after you Find a Plumber they would take you seriously.

Perhaps you prefer a bit of retro. Something that would have had Grand-Mama’s knitting needles clicking furiously? There Bathoom Tapsare hundreds of these to choose from these days, and you could take your pick from chrome, stainless steel, silver-or even gold-plated.

How about something on the side? I am talking taps here, by the way and strictly taps in case you asked. If I was building a new bathroom this is how I would do it personally. After all, why should Partner have to put up with a tap sticking in their back?

When all is said and done, there is a lot to say for simplicity too. My Dad taught me to keep it simple stupid and kiss success. I think that he was right. Do you? Another of the simple sensible things in life is Mr-Skill. Did you now that you can Find a Plumber there?

Low Cold-Water Pressure RSS

Posted in Plumbing, Heating & Gas on Mar 28

Low Cold-Water PressureThe first thing to remember is that cold-water pressure is relative, but that yours should be the same as both your neighbours. If all three homes have poor water pressure then the problem lies with council delivery and you should speak to them. If the problem is restricted just to you though, then you have a stoppage somewhere in your home. Here is how to track the problem down.

o Is the pressure low at every tap, or just at one? If just at one, then you most likely have a faulty tap, or hopefully just a damaged washer. Tap washers must be changed as soon as possible to avoid damaging the tap itself. Try changing yours right now. If this did not solve the problem, then Find a Plumber to Replace the Tap for You on Mr-Skill instead.

o If the pressure is low on several taps but not at all of them, then you might have a stoppage in a line somewhere. This is likely to be a valve in the line concerned that is not set fully open. My mate from <a href="http://www.mr-Low Cold-Water Pressureskill.co.uk/plumbing-heating-and-gas/”>Reliable Plumbers London always opens a valve fully and then closes it back a quarter turn. This is so he can work it back and forth if it gets sticky later.

o If the pressure is low throughout the house, then the main supply valve at the water meter could be partly closed. If all else has failed, then this could solve the problem easily. Remember not to leave it fully open either please.

If none of the above suggestions works a trick then I am afraid that you have a partial blockage in a pipe somewhere. You need to Find a Friendly Plumber to help you out on Mr-Skill, before you end up with a pipe burst. You will find plenty more helpful advice from the folk at Mr-Skill on this blog.

Chimney Care RSS

Posted in Plumbing, Heating & Gas on Feb 28

Should you be fortunate to have a fireplace in your house and be allowed to Chimney Caremake fires in it too, then you also need to know that it could burn your home down if not properly maintained. This is because as smoke goes up the chimney it deposits creosote on the surface inside – and creosote burns with the sound of a roaring aircraft when a thick layer burns inside. In fact the fire can be so hot as to set the roof on fire well.

An added hazard is that an older chimney can develop cracks that release carbon monoxide into the building which odourless gas is lethal – surely that in itself is sufficient cause to have your chimney inspected regularly?

In these days of central heating a chimney sweep is more of a curiosity than a popular trade. However any rated plumber working with heating and gas will either be a Chimney Specialist or know of somebody else who is. We recommend you contact Chimney Careone if you burn an open fire more than three times a year, especially if using green wood.

A retired Chimney Sweep who once worked for my firm of Plumbers in London always insisted that a bricklayer fitted a liner when building a new chimney in order to provide added insulation and thermal efficiency. These should be inspected at the same time a flue is swept.

Over time, the bond between the bricks at the top of the chimney and at the chimney pots themselves can weaken, and in a storm the whole thing could come crashing through your roof. After you Find a Plumber on Mr-Skill you must ask them to include a visual inspection in their quote so you can sleep well at night while the wind rages outside, and light a fire on a chilly night in confidence.

Replace a Kitchen Sink Drain RSS

Posted in Plumbing, Heating & Gas on Feb 23

The last thing you really want in life is to have your kitchen sink drain burst just as you and your in-laws are washing up after Sunday lunch. Don’t wait until the inevitable happens – at the first sign of seepage get a Plumbing Quote from Mr-Skill. If you are handy here is how the job is done.

Find a Kitchen Fittero You will need the right drain replacement kit, a short piece of pvc pipe (to connect to the bottom of the drain trap), pvc glue, pipe cleaner, plumbers tape, an adjustable wrench of the right size, a medium-sized pipe wrench, a bucket, a connector sleeve (to attach the drain pipe to the existing pipe), a hacksaw, light grade sandpaper and lots of patience.

If you don’t have all this and don’t appreciate the thought of fitting yourself in under the kitchen sink either, don’t stress – Mr-Skill can help you Find a Plumber at no extra cost at all.

o Assemble the drain replacement kit according the instructions – remember to fit all the washers the right way round and apply plumbers tape where indicated. When done this should exactly match the existing part in terms of connection points etc. If not a perfect match abort the job and get the right part before proceeding further.

Replace a Kitchen Sink Draino Put the bucket under the drain you wish to remove (it is full of dishwashing water) and cut through the pipe below the trap. Then you can unscrew the drain from where it attached to the underside of the sink and remove it, hopefully without messing dishwashing water everywhere.

o Smooth the cut edge of the pipe under the sink using the sandpaper and a twisting motion. Clean this up nicely afterwards, and the threaded bit under the sink too.

o Attach the assembled replacement drain to the underside of the sink remembering to use a generous amount of plumbers tape. Attach the connector sleeve to the stub of pipe with pvc glue and measure the gap between this and trap above. Cut a piece of pvc pipe to the right length, install this and you are ready to test your job when you are sure the glue is dry.

When I last had a Plumbing Job in London like this done they charged out two hours for labour. Friends tell me that sounds a little steep but then everything costs a bit more in the City, does it not.

Venting a Tumble Dryer RSS

Posted in Plumbing, Heating & Gas on Feb 11

Venting a Tumble DryerAn electric tumble dryer is a great asset in the British climate where washing can hang for days without drying and airing properly. The only problem with these marvellous appliances is that they pump moist air into the house where it steams up windows and fertilises the mold. The answer, pump the moist hot air outside – to do this Find a Plumber or read on below.

o Find a convenient place against an outside wall to stand your dryer, preferably where the lowest part of the dryer vent lines up with a point outside at least one foot off the ground. Before proceeding, make sure there are no pipes, cables or combustible materials between the dryer and outside.

o Carefully measure and very accurately mark a circle on the inside wall exactly opposite your dryer vent, then drill a ¼ inch hole through to the outside directly in the middle. Hire an appropriate hole saw from your local hardware shop (or several saws depending on the construction method of your home) and drill a short way from the inside. Finish the hole off by drilling from the outside making sure that the tool is cutting horizontally and allowing it to cool off from time to time. If you get as right as a Plumber in Venting a Tumble DryerLondon may, the two holes will line up perfectly.

o Insert the insulated ducting through the wall and attach it to the outside vent. Attached this vent in turn to the wall in a way that it can be removed for servicing. Returning inside, fit a collar to the duct inside and you are ready to connect up to your dryer.

Expert Tip As lint builds up inside the duct it creates a fire hazard to be taken very seriously. Avoid trouble – clean your vent out twice a year and if you are unsure how to do this get a Plumber Quote. Don’t give fire a place to start!

Central Heating Care RSS

Posted in Plumbing, Heating & Gas on Jan 24

During the long cold British winter the central heating system in a house should be the friend that welcomes you back home and keeps you tucked up snugly at night as well. Unfortunately some of take this friend for granted for too long, and so we see it breaking down at the very time we need it most.

This should all be avoidable when we find a plumber on Mr-Skill to take care of it on a maintenance contract for us.

A central heating system should in theory be foolproof were it not for the impurities in our water that cause scale. The owner of Mister Plumber London has a stated policy of attending to the following once or even twice a year:

o External inspection for visual damage and corrosion

o Examination of radiators, radiator valves and feeder pipes for structural integrity

o Inspection for scale, and scale removal as required

o System adjustments to ensure optimum thermal efficiency.

When you get plumbing quotes to attend to your central heating system, remember to make sure that a Gas Safe registered technician will be on hand as required. Mr-Skill lists many plumbing companies that match this requirement and are rated too.

Gas Safety in the Home RSS

Posted in Plumbing, Heating & Gas on Jan 12

During the incredibly cold weather over Christmas and New Year everybody’s central heating systems and gas effect fires were maxed (and many probably still are) while the cooker worked overtime preparing roasts and curries. Unfortunately not everybody knows what to do when a gas related problem occurs, usually after a long period of poor maintenance. If you are in any doubt at all about the safety of your equipment then you are urgently advised to find a Gas Fitter on Mr Skill.

As a homeowner or landlord you are responsible by law for the safe functioning of the gas fittings and appliances on your property, and are required to ensure that these are checked annually by a Gas Safe Registered Installer. Tenants are obliged to cooperate and to admit a Gas Repairperson whenever their services are required.

Each year people in the UK die unnecessarily from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by improperly installed or maintained domestic gas systems. You cannot see, taste or smell it, yet it could kill you after just a few hours exposure. Symptoms of poisoning include headaches, difficulty in thinking clearly, and feeling tired and sick.

If you suspect a problem …..

o Extinguish all open fires and cigarettes

o Switch off all heating and cooking appliances

o Open all doors and windows

o Consult a doctor at once

o Find a Gas Fitter registered with Gas Safe.

The best and only way to play safe in the long run is to get Gas Fitter quotes on Mr-Skill, and ask them inspect your home every year. Never try to do the inspections yourself – gas is too dangerous to take chances. Rather concentrate on enjoying a good sleep at night with no worries.

Unblock a Kitchen Sink RSS

Posted in Plumbing, Heating & Gas on Sep 17

There comes a time, even in the life of a kitchen sink installed by one of the leading plumbers in London, when the water refuse to drain down and a scummy mess remains. This is embarrassing at the best of times, and can even make you want to burst in tears when guests are present. Avoid heartaches – learn these lessons now before you need them.

The attached picture illustrates the principles perfectly, even though when you find a plumber on Mr-Skill you may expect a neater job. Notice that the dirty water from the sink, and from the dishwasher hose on the right both pass though U-Bends. These U-Bends trap water in them that prevents odors from passing from the drains below to the kitchen above.

Unfortunately, all of us from time to time are guilty of allowing lumps of food (or worse cold fat) to go down the kitchen drain. If this lumps or congeals in the U-Bend then the water cannot flow through the drain and you have a blockage. There are three ways to solve this problem:

o Fill the sink with water as hot as you can bear. Remove the sink plug. Place the palm of your hand over the opening while the water drains and pull it up and press it down repeatedly, trying to push the water through. If you are lucky, the drain will clear.

o If this does not solve the problem, repeat the process with an inexpensive rubber plunger that all hardware stores sell. The trick here is to block the sink drain hole by pushing the plunger down and creating a vacuum. When the sink is full, vigorously push the plunger up and down to clear the stoppage. If you have a double sink, pump the side closer to the U-Bend, asking a friend to hold the drain plug down on the other side (to prevent your efforts ending up on your kitchen floor).

You say that I said that there were three solutions. You are right. If neither of the above solves the problem, rather call for plumber quotes. The last thing you need is a septic cut that happens when you attempt to dismantle dirty plumbing.
