Cures for Squeaky Floor Boards RSS

Posted in Carpentry & Joinery on Nov 24

While parents may still find them handy for tracking teenagers in and out at night, the truth is that a squeaking floor is an irritating thing that is literally crying out for your attention. Before you look for cost-effective Carpenters Quotes on Mr-Skill, you may like to try out these handy ideas first.

Find a Carpenter on Mr-SkillFloor boards creak for one of three reasons, and these are some of the things you can do to fix them – possibly by yourself – once you have walked the floor and found the source:

1. They are incorrectly fitted and rubbing up against each other. Pour a little talcum powder into the crack and work it in by pressing up and down with your foot. If this works, repeat the treatment regularly.

2. The nails holding them down have worked loose. If at all possible, remove the nails completely and replace them with wood screws. If not, you may have to fit new screws separately, hammer the old nails in as best you can, and fill the nail heads with filler. Start with two screws, each towards the outer edge of the board, remembering to countersink them. Only add a middle one if necessary.

3. Find a Carpenter on Mr-SkillThe floor support is inadequate. This is a major job and you need to Find a Carpenter on Mr-Skill to do the job for you. They will remove a section of floor boards, add additional supporting battens and re-lay the floor. If done correctly by a professional there is no reason why the job will not work. Done incorrectly by a cowboy though, and it could cost you the floor.

There are Experts in London Carpentry on Mr-Skill, and specialist carpenters working in almost every other United Kingdom postcode too. When you Hire a Skilful Tradesman here, you not only get one with all the correct papers. You also get to save pounds off normal market rates.

Caring for Wooden Furniture RSS

Posted in Cleaning Services on Mar 09

Wood is a beautifully natural medium that can last forever if correctly cared for. Because it is natural though, it starts to decay as soon as a tree is cut down, which means it must be looked after all its life. If you have especially valuable Caring for Wooden Furnitureantique wooden furniture you should consider getting Housekeeper Quotes from those specialised in the field.

The first step to caring for wood it is to determine which finish was applied to it

Expert Tip: Test in a less obvious place first.

Step 1: Rub a few drops of boiled linseed oil into the wood. Is the oil absorbed? Is yes, the wood either has an oiled finish, or it is natural wood – if neither, read on.

Step 2: Rub a little acetone over a spot in a gently circular motion. Is the acetone repelled? Then the finish is polyurethane. Is the acetone dissolved? Then the wood is lacquered – if neither, read on.

Step 3: Try a few drops of denatured alcohol. If the finish dissolves quickly it is shellac. Does it react slowly instead? Then the wood has been varnished.

Caring for Wooden FurnitureGenerally speaking, wood that has been oiled will benefit from a monthly application of a little good furniture oil to prevent it from drying out or cracking. Check to make sure that the oil will not make the wood go darker first. With this exception, you can keep all your furniture in tip-top condition with a general-purpose surface cleaner once a month, and a dusting once a week between.

Never expose wooden furniture to harsh chemicals or bright sunlight. Do not allow moisture to lie on any piece of wood for long, or else it may stain it permanently. This includes plastic or rubber objects that can generate their own humidity because they do not breathe.

If your wood furniture becomes water stained, a rated Cleaner in London may be able to provide some expert advice. Our advice is not to take chances with things you do not understand – rather Find a Housekeeper on Mr-Skill.

It is entirely possible to achieve a solution when you Find a Carpenter rated by Mr-Skill. This is not a job for amateurs though, because wood is not forgiving and there is no undo-button on a saw.

o Sistering involves attaching extra bracing on either side of a weakened joist. The bracing must be balanced in terms of weight and strength and be firmly glued and screwed, or better bolted on.

o Carpenters in London often also recommend Fix a Creaking Wooden FloorStiffening by adding timber to the bottom of the joist. While this is not much use after damage has occurred, it is an excellent preventative measure.

o Epoxy-Based Wood Aggregate is the preferred method of repairing rot or termite damage once wood has been treated. Use it to repair a damaged joist and you may not need to replace, sister or stiffen it either.

Get Rid of That Fabric Stain RSS

Posted in Cleaning Services on Nov 04

Expensive items like lounge suites and carpets should be vacuumed and dusted regularly to prevent airborne dust and grime from settling. Accidents still happen through, and then the panic sets in. What to do with little Johnny’s chocolate snack all over the curtains, or the lipstick with which his sister Mary redecorated the couch? Where can we find a cleaner to make the problem go away for us?

o        All stains are by definition liquid, or else they would not penetrate fabric. For first aid, mop stains gently with white paper towel taking care not to make the problem worse.

o        Grease stains, like butter, gravy, fat and salad dressing are best removed by blotting further with a white cloth or paper towel soaked in dry-cleaning liquid. When the pad finally comes away clean, blot the stain again, but this time with dishwashing liquid working from the outside of the stain to the centre.

o        Makeup and Ink stains should be rubbed gently with rubbing alcohol, and then immediately blot-dried. For stubborn stains that do not respond this way, re-blot with a solution of water and vinegar – may sure you blot this away immediately.

o        In the case of Juice, Wine and Tomato-Based Sauce stains wet the affected area lightly with warm water and let this soak in for one minute. Blot dry with paper towel and repeat the process several times until the towel comes clean. After that, rub gently with diluted dishwashing liquid, followed by club soda or tonic water (a favourite trick that cleaners in London use) and blot dry again.

o        In the case of all these stains, finish off finally by blotting with warm water and patting dry with a clean towel. When completely dry, brush to remove any dried dirt and to blend the grain of the fabric back together again.

If the staining is extensive and you do not have the time, then you should consider getting cleaner quotes instead. Stains can set permanently in no time at all, and urgent action is required.
