Choosing Locksmiths Wisely RSS

Posted in Locksmith on Mar 08

Most of us don’t think twice about a locksmith, until we actually need one. The problem could be at your home, the safe in your office, or maybe the fact that you have locked yourself out of your car. Whatever the situation, you are in a state of panic. This unwanted event might easily ruin your day.

Find a Locksmith on Mr-SkillThe intricate design of modern locks and keys means that once we have locked ourselves out, there is very little that we can do about it. Sure, you could smash a window in your car or house, but that will likely attract the attention of the neighbours and the long arm of the law!

Try explaining why you are breaking into your own car or house then. You could well end up in trouble! Rather find a locksmith on the basis that they are experts in electronic and mechanical locks, and can return your situation to normal as soon as possible.

Locksmith Services

Locks – A London locksmith will stock a wide range of products, covering all leading brands. Make sure that you are dealing with a registered locksmith before you call.

Key Cutting – An approved locksmith with a key code or sample should be able to help you straight away.

Find a Locksmith on Mr-SkillSafes – If you have lost the key to your safe, you will have no other option. Contact your approved local locksmith (unless you have a friend with a stick of dynamite).

Vehicle Keys – Car dealers are careful about replacing key sets without proof of ownership. Your approved locksmith should be able to advise what to do.

Choosing a Locksmith

It is important to check that your insurer approves your locksmith if you plan to claim. When you ask for a locksmith quote, make sure they are current members of the Master Locksmith Association. Remember, that locksmith will have knowledge of your keys and locks, so be careful who you deal with. It’s far safer to work through Mr-Skill, and it’s free to customers too.

Should you Keep Left-Over Paint? RSS

Posted in Painting & Decorating on Feb 24

Whether you Find a Decorator on Mr-Skill or do the job yourself, you inevitably end up with left-over pots of paint. Those with just a few scrapings in them are best thrown away. Those still at least a quarter full could be worth preserving for touch-up jobs.

Find a Painter on Mr-SkillReseal Quickly – Air is the enemy of paint because paint’s supposed to dry in its presence. Clean both lid and tin carefully where they come together. Insert a sheet of film or tinfoil. Close firmly to achieve an airtight seal without causing any distortion.

Label the Tin – Begin to clean your brush by painting a colour-patch on the tin in a way that does not cover up any important information. Use a laundry marker to note the dates when bought and used, and the colour code if the paint was specially mixed.

Store Away Sensibly – I know a London Painter who insists in storing paint tins upside down so that the paint remains above the film and not beneath it. I’ve followed his advice and found it works quite well. In any case, store the tin away from extreme heat and cold.

Find a Painter on Mr-SkillUsing Old Paint – Paint has a limited shelf-life and many manufacturers suggest that it should be used within a year of being purchased. Don’t be tempted to bring down the cost of a Decorating Quote by using paint that’s gone beyond its usefulness. In any case, make sure it’s strained through a fine mesh sieve or piece of muslin, and into a clean container and well stirred.

Storing paint is really only really useful when you have a plan to use it shortly. This could be when you are half-way through an upgrade, and just want to brighten up a wall. In other instances it may just be an excuse to accumulate more clutter.

Be brave. Know the difference. Why not give your old paint tins a fresh view on life instead.

Remove Ivy from a Brick Wall RSS

Posted in Gardening & Landscaping on Sep 16

Climbing ivy is undoubtedly a sight to behold as spread out across a wall and creates an environment in which the birds may nest. But it has its disadvantages too. Snakes and spiders and even rats may use it to gain access to your bedroom, and it can also cause damage to bricks, window frames and gutters. Find a Gardener on Mr-SkillAre you of a mind to get rid of yours? Then you may need to Find a Gardener on Mr-Skill to do the work for you. That’s because standing on a ladder all day is dangerous, and the job is laborious too. Not convinced to call in help? Then here is what you need to do…

• Pull a test sample of ivy away from the wall to determine how thick it is, and whether it tears off without causing damage. If it comes away easily then you could continue. If not, then you may need to get Gardening Quotes to have poison applied by an expert, and perhaps even call in a builder afterwards to make repairs.

• Returning to ground level, lop off all the vines as close as possible to the ground before proceeding to peel away the cut branches. Be careful here, because a sheet of ivy can come loose unexpectedly, and this will be heavy and surprisingly dusty too. Do not attempt to deal with the tiny hand-like suckers yet.

• Find a Gardener on Mr-SkillBag the cuttings and dispose of them at your local council dump-site according to the bylaws.

• After approximately two to three weeks, remove the suckers with a stiff wire brush covered with approximately two tablespoons of household laundry detergent. Every Gardener in London knows all too well not to miss the deadline. That’s because beyond this period the suckers oxidize, and are stubborn to remove.

So there you go. It’s not really all that difficult to get ivy off a wall. It’s just a messy, time-consuming job. Not in the mood to do it anymore? Then speak to Mr-Skill about the services of a Rated Local Gardener.

Personally, I find the patina of natural brickwork far more appealing, especially on an older building.

External Plastering Techniques RSS

Posted in Plastering & Drywall on May 31

In days gone past plastering over exterior walls was popular because it covered crooked surfaces and helped with waterproofing too. It is less popular these days though, because it is labour-intensive to Find a Plasterermaintain as opposed to face-bricks. If you own an older home then you may also own one with exterior plastered walls. In this case the chances are that these will need repairing from time to time, meaning that you could need to Find a Plasterer.

Stucco Plaster otherwise known as Rendering was commonly used during the 19th Century when it was composed primarily of lime. These days cement is more often used to apply one of several different qualities of finish:

o Common Stucco aims to produce a surface that is as smooth and even as possible

o Rough Stucco is more uneven and is scribed with lines to imitate bricks or stonework

o Find a PlastererStucco may also be dyed with pigments to produce a permanently tinted effect. Great care must be taken when mixing to ensure a consistent hue.

RoughCast or Pebbledash is a cruder external plastering solution that requires a lower skill level and is cheaper to apply.

o In DryDash, pebbles or gravel are pressed into wet plaster to create a rustic effect.

o WetDash uses a slightly different technique whereby a mixture of aggregate and plaster is towelled over as a top coat.

Before choosing between Plastering Quotes make sure that you know what the contractor envisages, and ask to see samples of similar work previously done. Plastering is an art-form that develops through experience, not just after training.

Selecting Bathroom Accessories RSS

Posted in Handyman Services on Apr 26

Bathroom accessories are sometimes rip-offs where cowboy tile shops make up their profits. The ones illustrated here are not like that at all. In fact, they are the kind you should Selecting Bathroom Accessoriesconsider specifying when getting a Bath Fitting Quote. Here are some tips to avoid being caught by cheap swindles unlike these.

o Never buy bath fittings in a box that a shop assistant refuses to open, on the basis that nobody else would be prepared to buy them afterwards. Reputable suppliers provide consignment samples so customers can inspect them properly.

o In fact, never buy boxed sets at all, especially those on special offer. While they may display attractively, in reality they are likely to be tawdry and will include a few pieces you may never need.

o Find out what the underlying material consists of. Brass and copper are unnecessarily expensive, while alloy castings break easily. The ones made of artificial mouldings are far more practical.
Selecting Bathroom Accessories
o Particularly if you live near the coast, ask about the surface coating too. Look for a 3-year guarantee against flaking, chipping and rusting – if this is not provided, expect to replace your bathroom fittings after two years or more.

o A Bath Fitter London with experience may insist in being part of your final decision. While most of us are mesmerised by style, professionals also think about methods of attachment, and how well these work in practice.

Now that you know the background to bathroom accessories the next step is to buy and fit them. Are you afraid of cracking a precious wall tile? Speak to Mr-Skill and let them help you Find a Bathroom Fitter to make your life a little easier instead.

Start an Organic Garden RSS

Posted in Gardening & Landscaping on Nov 25

As folk begin to realise just how bad some agricultural chemicals are for us, and how the goodness is being squeezed out of our food to make it last longer on the shelf, they are beginning to notice organic foods on the shelves of shops. It is also possible to grow your own organic vegetables and herbs, just like Granny used to, and how Mother Nature intended too. The initial work is arduous though, and it can be a good idea to find a gardener to get you started.

o Set Realistic Goals – Begin with something small and manageable (a home business can follow later if at all). This way, you will enjoy your organic garden, not treat it like a chore.

o Select your Site Carefully – Vegetables and herbs need six hours of sunshine a day, so keep them out of shade. Good drainage is important too. Remember to take a sample of the soil for testing. Gardeners in London know that plants thrive only where conditions are right for them.

o Create the Bed – After you have marked out the boundaries and removed everything growing there as well, it is time to dig over the earth. First, remove one spade-depth to the side, and then dig the next layer over well too, before putting the first layer back again.

o Feed the Earth – Dig in loads of good organic compost (chemicals are not allowed at all) and lots of sand if you have heavy clay. While at it, follow the advice of the laboratory that rested your soil, in terms of nutrients and acidity. Many of our favourite herbs and plants come from warmer, drier climates and you have to replicate conditions there, if you want them to grow well in an English garden too.

o Mark Out the Bed – When deciding where to plant your favourite vegetables and herbs have a thought about creating a special place of beauty too. Some vegetables repel each other, while others intertwine like lovers. Set out your plan with pegs, and stick to it when you plant.

o Buy your Seedlings – Make sure to choose organic plants that are free of insects and disease. Plants fed with chemicals may look healthier and better, but they will soon begin to fade in your organic garden without their chemical “fix”.

o Plant Out your Organic Garden – Moisten the seedlings in their containers first. Remove the plants from their containers one by one making sure not to take the soil from roots (unless they are root bound, in which case you have top tease them out). Place them in a hole twice as wide as the plant will take, backfill this with soil, tamp it down to the same level as the plant is used to, and water thoroughly to bind the earth to the roots.

It takes a surprising amount of work to start an organic garden. If the work is too much for you, then you could always get gardener quotes on Mr-Skill to help you on your way. Once established, your little garden will provide pleasure for many years to come.
