White Van Myths Dispelled by Insurance Survey RSS

The insurance company Aviva recently conducted a survey amongst their clients which dispelled the myth that “White Van Man” was no more than an urban thug.

Tradesmen in London are the smartest, sexiest and most successful drivers on the road their research showed, with over 70% having an interest in politics and current affairs.

Smart Tradesmen in London

Over half of the white van drivers surveyed said that they regularly read books, compared to one-in-ten sports car owners.

Sexy Tradesmen in London

Most of the white van drivers questioned responded that they like to keep themselves in shape and pursued some form of outdoor leisure activity.

Successful Tradesmen in London

Half of all van drivers were the boss of their own business, as compared to 83% of sports car drivers who work for someone else.

Nigel Bartram, motoring expert at Aviva, who carried out the survey, said: “It’s great to prove what we already knew – van drivers are switched on and enterprising! Gone are the days of the traditional white van man stereotype. What our research shows is that van drivers are entrepreneurial and responsible.  This is why we have tailored direct motor insurance to cater for the 21st century van driver.”

With half of van drivers opting to fix household appliances when they break rather than ask for help, they are also the handiest to have at home. After a hard day’s work, a tradesman in London is more likely to catch a news bulletin or documentary than anything else on the box and, out of all drivers questioned, is the least likely to watch reality TV.

Sofeminine.co.uk added a female perspective to the results of the survey with the comment that “A white van driver may not be so likely to have a degree, but he has a big package” – So much for stereotypes!

For a deeper look into the psyche of a white van driver tradesman in London, visit the Social Issue Research Centre web site, who produced a quite eye-opening and humorous insight into this social phenomenon, and concluded that in order to change their image, tradesmen in London should paint their vans a different colour!

DIY? London Man-with-a-Van? London Removal Expert? RSS

Posted in Moving Homes & Hauliers on Aug 20

When you have found a new home to move to, one of the big decisions is whether to take on the job of moving home yourself, or employ the services of a London Man-with-a-Van or a London removal company to help you. There are pros and cons of each option, and here we look at some of the reasons both for and against.

Do-it-Yourself?

Trying to move too economically can present its own problems!

The two biggest perceived advantages of moving home by yourself are the amount of money you may save and the fact that you could possibly stretch your move over several days if the opportunity exists. To make moving home a little easier, you can rope in a few friends for the price of a meal, and being able to take your time and move your possessions over a few days or couple of weekends is a bit of a luxury. However, if you only have a small car you are going to have to hire a van and there are a couple of things you should take into consideration before doing this.

  • Hiring a decent sized transit van could set you back up to £100 a day and if you intend to hire anything larger than a Box Van, you will need to have a C1 driving licence.
  • Secondly, if you are moving home far away, you will have to pay a premium for one way van rental.
  • Thirdly, you are going to have to move all your belongings yourself!

London Man-with-a-Van?

Make sure that your Man-with-a-Van has got a suitable vehicle!

Using the services of a London Man-with-a-Van is really handy if you have smaller amounts of belongings to move. The extra pair of hands is an advantage and a London Man-with-a-Van is not that expensive for short journeys as you normally pay by the hour. There is quite a lot of competition amongst Man-with-a-Van companies in London as you will see if you look in our Tradesmen´s Directory and you should be able to get a good choice of quotes from men-with-a-van in London by using our “Post-a-Job” facility. However …

  • A London Man-with-a-Van may not be able to provide a large enough van to move everything you need in one go – making return trips that much more expensive.
  • You need to check that they are fully insured for transporting the value of your goods (They won´t be offended if you ask).
  • If you are moving a long distance, a London Man-with-a-Van may want to charge you for the time he is driving back to London with an empty van.

London Removal Experts?

Many hands make light work, but you will pay for it in the end!

London removal experts are probably far more suitable for a larger move. Removal companies in London will normally be able to supply packing cases and materials in advance of your move to help you prepare for moving day and usually turn up with a team of removal men to help load your belongings and unload them at the other end. Normally they should charge from the time they turn up at your old home until the time they depart from your new home and inasmuch as they move people for a living and are very experienced, removal companies have their downside too!

  • If three or four men are on site to help you load and unload, your costs of moving home will increase dramatically.
  • You may find that you have to move to fit in with their schedules rather move than at a time that would be more convenient to you.
  • Because of health and safety regulations, removal men will not be able to help you if you have heavy items you want moved from areas with restricted access – such as a loft.

When moving home there are advantages and disadvantage connected with all three alternatives. The one you choose will be the one most suitable for the scale and distance of your move. However, you can be sure of getting the most competitive quotes from London Man-with-a-Van companies and removal experts in London if you use the “Post-a-Job” facility at the top of the page. You may also consider taking on part of the job yourself, in which case our “Top Tips for Moving Home” will be of interest to you.
