There’s nothing quite as irritating as losing keys, or battling with sticking locks without a plan to bail you out. In fact, at times like this you sometimes feel like hitting your head in frustration against a wall. If in the City, you’ll need to Find a London Locksmith to bail you out, and that could cost you a pretty penny too. This might all have been avoidable, if you had followed these simple tips:
- Have your outside locks serviced regularly. You can Obtain a Locksmith Quote by clicking on the link. There’s no charge for this service, and the rates you receive will be highly competitive too.
- Inspect your keys regularly for signs of damage. A bent key is brittle, and could suddenly snap in two pieces. A worn one could eventually fail to work, just when you need it most
- Make up a spare set of keys. Click on this link to Find a Locksmith in your immediate area. Once you have a spare set, entrust them to a neighbour or some other trustworthy person.
TIP – Never leave your spare keys hidden on your property or in your car. Trust me, crooks know every place that you could think of, and you can even find these listed on the internet. Act wisely in this regard.
Mr-Skill is a tradesperson-listing service that is freely available to members of the general public, and provides a Bulletin Board where you can post your jobs. And that includes far more than just having keys cut too.
In fact, we provide Links to Every Trade Available, and deliver our service FREE.

By now we hope that you have the assurance that every one of our handy men and ladies has been personally assessed by us, and that we monitor their performance, as we do with all our other trades. That way, when you ask for a Handyman Quote from us, you already know that they know what they are about.
But we also believe that there is more to choosing a handyman than simply that, and this is why we recommend that you get several quotes and interview all three. The chemistry must be right between the two of you, and they must fit in with your lifestyle as well – or else there could be unintended distractions.
o Will they get on with Rover? Dogs are supposed to mistrust strangers and can refuse to be friends with anybody they don’t like. In fact when I had a lot to do with London Handyman Services some years ago, I always let my Bulldog Winston be the judge of character. If he licked and snuffled I knew the handyperson would be okay. If not, why then I took the dog’s advice, and I must say he never let he down.
o Do they Smoke (If you do not? I don’t know about you, but ever since I gave up smoking, I have found the smell that hangs around even non-smoking smokers pretty offensive. If you feel this way too, then you have the right to make your own decision – in fact you could even add non-smokers preferred to your requirements.
o Is the Handyman a Missionary? I’m not taking about religion here, in fact I’m talking about any point of view that some people like to hammer in to me as if it were a nail. It’s quite easy to detect too – just ask the leading question what you do in your spare time towards the end of the interview, and then see where the conversation rolls. I’ve personally never understood why I should pay to be converted to some other person’s of view.
I thought I’d share these ideas with you on the subject of how best to Find a Handyman that suits you best. I’ve found from my experience that if I, the dog and a service provider don’t get on famously, then the quality of the job could suffer, which is the last thing we want to see happen at Mr-Skill.

We all tend to travel with too much gear, and that includes when we move between homes. As a result we pay movers to pack, transport and unpack goods that we really no longer require, and may pay dearly for that privilege too. And when we do try doing something about all the junk we have accumulated, we invariably are distracted or cannot find the time.
And the answer? Find a Cleaner to take the pain out of the gain! Why so?
o A cleaner has the time to do the job thoroughly, and often has a sharp eye to make suggestions too. Moreover, when you Find One on Mr-Skill the chances are excellent that you could trust them.
o A cleaner is objective and will ask you probing questions when you allow them to. They will not hang on to all the alibis that you sometimes use either. For them an anorak without a sleeve, or a cell phone without a battery are both useless junk, although they may hold memories too for you.
o A cleaner is also an expert at tidying up and finding storage places for the goods that you decide to keep. When negotiating for Cleaner Quotes to de-clutter it is fairer to agree an hourly rate instead of a fixed price one, because neither of you probably have the faintest idea how long the job could take.
Several Cleaners in London that I know well make their main living out de-cluttering people’s lives from time to time. Why not try the experience too? You could be amazed at the difference this makes to your peace of mind.

Unfortunately cowboy builders keep on popping up under the guise of pretending to be handymen and women. The difficulty comes when they start fiddling with basics like roofs, windows, doors and even foundations. Newspaper reports across the UK every week attest to the foolishness of hiring the services of an unqualified, incompetent builder. Mr-Skill exists to help you Find a Builder you should be able to rely on.
My old friend Bill Sykes who is a venerable Builder in London with decades of experience just laughs when he reads these stories. “What fools they are”, he chortles. “Haven’t they heard about the NHBC?” In case you have not heard of it either, The National House Building Council is the leading warranty, insurance and standard-setting provider in the UK building industry. They have been protecting the nation’s homeowners for over 75 years so something must be working well.
Their warranties (which naturally apply only to work done by builders in good standing with them) cover around 80% of new houses being built today, and all-in-all 1.7 million British homes are under current protection. This provides assurances against only major defects though, not cosmetic issues like plaster cracks.
After you receive your Building Quotes from Mr-Skill remember to ask “are you NHBC registered?” and to request to see a current paid-up certificate too. If you receive an excuse instead then we recommend you pass that builder over in favour of another. When the job is done, but before you pay them finally, please remember to insist that you receive your written NHBC Warranty.

In this busy, sometimes even hectic world in which we find ourselves these days, many of us are just too busy to keep our homes and gardens as tidy as we would like them to be. A garden service has become a popular replacement for a retained gardener. Few of us have servants any more. Has it become time for UK families to Find a Housekeeper to come in once a week? There are two broad ways to tackle the problem.
1. Get Housekeeping Quotes from a professional housekeeping firm. Sometimes these folk bring in a cleaning team. Others prefer to act as brokers for individual cleaning persons. There are advantages to this approach although it can be a little impersonal at times They fulfil the role of employers, and are bound to supply replacements when your regular cleaner is ill or away on holiday.
2. There are many Housekeepers in London who prefer to go solo, and you can find these on Mr-Skill too. They usually begrudge the percentages that labour brokers charge, but also prefer to hand-pick their clients personally. They are often like Mrs Doubtfire in the Robin Williams movie in so far as their dedication and skills are concerned. Find a good one, to come in on one or more days a week, and your problems could be gone forever.
Many United Kingdom families regard their homes as their castles, and resist the thought of letting strangers in. When you hire a housekeeping service through Mr-Skill you gain two advantages. The first is a rated individual or firm you that can trust more easily, The second could almost be a cleaning friend for life.

I am often asked this tricky question, which is about as easy to answer as is deciding whether a beggar is genuine. The correct answer is that you get dishonest as well as honest people in every walk of life, which is why it is safer, easier (and often cheaper) to Find a Handyman on Mr-Skill. That’s way you get an individual who has been assessed, and rated by other customers before.
Given that a tradesman seldom has an independent rating about you as a prospective customer, it is not unreasonable to expect that they will ask for some form of guarantee from you before blocking out their time and buying in materials. Many of them live from hand to mouth, and not trusting customers without reason is part of their culture too.
One way around the problem is to get a Handyman Quote for labour only and buy the materials for the job yourself. This is not the way the trades prefer to operate – they would rather hunt these down themselves at lower prices than they estimated, and increase their profits in that way. They will in any case require a deposit before starting work, in case at the end of the first week a customer suddenly runs out of money just before the first progress payment falls due.
Try to see it from the handyman’s point of view. Just as you are trying to protect yourself from a dishonest deal, so are they. If they do the job and you refuse to pay them, then there is not an awful amount that they can do, given the cost of lawyers – and you get to keep their work.
In a perfect world, customer and handyman would trust each other perfectly. Mr-Skill is a bridge along that road because they act as independent brokers who introduce parties to each other. By using them, the transaction is out in the open, and a handyman is unlikely to risk their reputation with Mr-Skill for a few extra pounds.
Handyman London and Surrounds have perfected their approach towards finance. When they quote, they include the deposit they require and their proposal for progress payments too. That way, there is an opportunity for open honest negotiation before appointing them.
In the end though, the trades all work in a similar way when it comes to money, and the real question is not should one pay a deposit to a handyman, but do you have a feel-good factor about the person, and why? By choosing Mr-Skill you have already made the first step in the right direction, the deal is out in the open and there is an excellent chance that everything will go well. Don’t you think that that’s a good idea?
