First you notice that the grout between the tiles has begun to crack. You wonder whether it’s time to Find a Tiler. After that, the grout starts going darker in one spot. Finally, when you tread on a tile, it rocks slightly as the moisture squishes out.
Fortunately, this is not the end of the world! The good news is that the tile is loose and will be easy to remove. After that, you can have a Plumber in to fix the leak, and perhaps even replace the tile afterwards yourself.
- Avoid your first reaction to lever out the tile. Chances are that you will chip it, and where on earth will you find a replacement one? One London Tiler I know wets the loose tile generously, and then uses a toilet plunger to create a vacuum and gently ease it out. Try it. You could just be pleasantly surprised!
- Depending on how bad the leak is, you may need to turn the water off. If the water is not bubbling out from where you removed the first tile, you may need to chase the leak by removing several more. This is easy when you gently tap a paint scraper
underneath the middle of the tile, because the mortar will be water-logged.
- Find a Plumber on Mr-Skill to repair the leak. Then wait patiently until the hole the plumber left behind has dried out completely. After that, back-fill it with a strong mix of mortar, and get a Tiling Quote to put the tiles back and re-grout. If you do the job yourself, use an epoxy as there will be insufficient space for tile cement except where the plumber made the hole.
This information comes to you with best wishes of Mr-Skill, that friendly website where you can find every service that you need. These services include electricians, builders, plasterers, carpenters, gardeners and a whole host more besides. The service costs you nothing, and they are all rated too.

It’s surprising how many enquiries we receive about attaching things to walls. While this is the perfect job for a Handyman, it’s quite simple to do yourself. That’s provided you have the right equipment and safety gear. Should you decide to have a go, then these are the seven main things to watch out for.
Safety Tip
A London Handyman will always have a strong ladder, an assistant and a modern electric drill to help him do his work. If you don’t have the same, please don’t even try to do the job.
- Always use a sharp masonry drill bit that’s slightly undersized for the wall plug you’re installing. You can always make it larger afterwards, but you cannot make it smaller.
- Before you drill, consider what might lurk inside the wall. Never drill directly opposite an electric box, or in line with a water pipe. Remember to check outside the house too.
- Re-check your measurements carefully before you drill. If the item you are fitting has more than one attaching point, fit a single one initially. Then you can level it and mark the other points.
- Make sure the drill is at right angles to the wall before you press the switch. Are you wearing safety goggles? Drill bits occasionally do snap.
Have a friend hold a vacuum cleaner extension pipe in position to suck the dust up before it covers everything.
- Drill through the plaster on the standard setting before you switch to impact. Never force an electric tool. Use it in ten second bursts and do not let it overheat.
- When you are finished, lay the drill down somewhere safe, and unplug it from the wall.
Do you think that you could do the job yourself and avoid the cost of Handyman Quotes? Many people do.
Many others prefer to Find a Handyman on Mr-Skill instead, and get on with other more important things in their lives.

There’s nothing quite as sad as a worktop with a corner broken off, or burned by a hot saucepan or an electric iron. Fear not. A replacement is not as expensive as you think, even when done by a London Kitchen Fitting Firm.
• Obtain a replacement piece that’s cut to size, and edged-off at any exposed end / ends. In that case, remember to allow an overhang that matches the other worktops as closely as possible.
• Clear the old worktop of everything. Remove the cabinet doors and clear the units completely. Carefully inspect for stains or water damage, because this is the best chance you’ll have to do repairs for some time.
• Remove the seal between the worktop and the tiles, and rout out any grout taking care not to chip or crack the tiles. Take your time – this is where you make a professional difference. If the gap is tight, you might need to Find a Kitchen Fitter to assist.
• Remove the screws that attach the worktop to the cabinetry from underneath, making sure you find them all. Double-check that the top is clear of all the tiles, and then gently work it loose. You must work evenly and gently to avoid any contact with the tile edges.
• When completely free, remove the old worktop from the kitchen. Vacuum up all the dust. Wipe the surfaces clean and have a cup of tea. You’re past the halfway point!
• Lay the new top roughly in position, and gently move it into the space between the cabinetry and tiles. Attach it to the cabinetry from underneath, using the old holes and similar screws. Grout in the gap, and when this is dry add a bead of silicone. Now you can re-fit the doors and get on with your life. What a pleasure – damage controlled.
This information is provided with the compliments of Mr-Skill, although we recommend that only experienced people attempt this project. Should you decide to obtain Kitchen Fitter Quotes instead, we assure you of our best service, and top value in the industry too!

There’s nothing quite like the beauty of a wooden floor in good condition, especially one that’s been treated to bring out the natural colour. Moreover wooden floors are far easier to keep clean too, so no wonder they have been popular for so long. Is your wooden floor looking a bit tatty? Perhaps you just moved into a neglected, older home? No worries. The situation is quite easily recovered, provided that the underlying state of the floor is good. Either Find a Floor Sander Here, or tackle the job yourself as follows:
o First, lay your hands on a good quality rented floor sander which should not cost more than £60 a week at most. While you’re at it, rent a floor edging sander too. You will also need a varnish applicator, a mop and bucket, a hammer, a floor pad, and, of course the varnish.
o Stay out of trouble and close the door into the rest of the house, or mask the opening off. Inspect the floor carefully for anything that could rip the paper in the sander. Patch any larger gaps with strips of wood hammered tightly in, and fill the smaller ones with papier mache tinted with water-based wood dye.
o Sand the floor as instructed by the hire-shop clerk. There are too many different sanders to describe the process here. After you have worked through the process from coarse paper though to fine, vacuum thoroughly and wipe down with white spirit to remove every scrap of dust.
o Apply a coat of varnish, and let it dry completely. Lightly sand by hand to key the surface, wipe it down with thinners and apply a second coat. The more times you repeat the process, the more beautiful the gloss and the more durable the finish will be – which is why London Flooring Services always achieve such high quality results.
If you feel a little intimidated at the thought of sanding floors, when why not consider getting Floor Sanding Quotes from Mr-Skill instead? All our tradespeople come with personal recommendations, and you can see what other customers think about them right here too. How’s that for another good idea to make life easier?

Thankfully, the days are far gone now when cleaners asked you to move away from your desk so that they could vacuum underneath it and empty your waste-paper basket. Far worse than the immediate distraction was the likelihood of second-order discussions developing around water-coolers. Not to mention the possibility of the office exploding into a series of allergic sneezes.
Many firms both large and small these days are more than equally content to Find a Cleaner or Janitorial Service to come in after business hours. Professional cleaners these days also offer far more than just a waste-paper basket and vacuum cleaning service. In fact, a Cleaner in London may surprise with all these other things they do and more.
o Furniture and carpet deep-cleaning and shampoo

o De-scaling washrooms and sanitising kitchens
o Removing and sorting rubbish for recycling.
o Preparing for builders and cleaning up thereafter
At Mr-Skill, we list a variety of Cleaning and Housekeeping Services. Some firms have been in business for many years and all are rated by us. Many offer staggered services including daily and weekly calls, and spring-cleaning too. No matter what business sector you may be in, we can help you get the Cleaner Quote that is right for you.
Just think how good it will feel when you return to work on Monday and find everything waiting perfectly for you. Now how is that for another great labour-saving idea.

Bathroom grout was originally introduced to close the gaps between ill-fitting tiles and prevent the water weakening the cement behind by causing continuous damp. These days it has a decorative function too, although it can also get pretty grotty over time. If the mould-spores have set in there’s little point in keeping on scrubbing. In fact it could just be time to call in a Bathroom Fitter London Residents recommend and put in a whole new bathroom.
Before you go to this extreme and get a Bath Fitter Quote it might just be possible to re-grout the tiles. Here’s how to go about doing what is admittedly a tedious job. You will need the following tools:
1. Grout Saw (hired from your local hardware store)
2. Vacuum Cleaner (ask the boss first)
3. Small Wire Brush, Grout Spreader
4. Grout, Water & Sponge
Remove the Grout – Cut through the grout as close as possible to one side of a tile line using the grout saw and being careful to avoid chipping. As you repeat the process on the other side the tool will oscillate the grout loose and you can pick it up with the vacuum cleaner.
Tidy Up – Insert the wire brush into the space between the tiles and remove any grout left behind. Vacuum thoroughly and wash down carefully. Grout does not stick to dust so make sure you get this right.
Apply the Grout – Do this the following day to make sure that things are completely dry. Apply the mixed grout with the grout spreader leaving as little material behind and smoothing the grout between the tiles with a suitably profiled piece of plastic. After the grout on the tiles has dried to a haze remove it with a dry sponge or cloth tidying up any untidy edges of grout with a moist finger (do not overwork your skin!). The next day polish up the tiles and apply a grout sealer if desired.
If you do all this carefully and with sufficient attention to detail you may be able to extend the life of your bathroom for another year. If the boss is unhappy with the result then I’m afraid you’ll have to Find a Bathroom Fitter. But at least you tried your best to save some money for a while.

Did you just take occupation of a house you bought, and find it filthy dirty? Well rest assured that you are not the only one to have this problem – it is often more the rule than the exception nowadays. It happened to me once too. Here are some good ideas I picked up from cleaners in London that gave me sterling service, and were surprisingly cheap too.
o Scuffmarks on a resilient kitchen floor are common even in a well loved home. A rubbing paste made out of baking soda and a little warm water will soon work them away.
o Are the enamelled sinks and bathtubs full of dirty stains? Soak a few brown paper bags in bleach and leave them in them overnight. Next morning, prepare to be pleasantly surprised.
o Many houses smell really awful, as if their owners put up with this for years. Combine one-teaspoon lemon juice and one of baking powder, mix this with two cupfuls of hot water, put the mixture in a trigger spray, spray it around the house, and your smelly problems will be gone.
o To clean a smelly carpet, first make up a mixture of one-cup borax, one-cup cornmeal, and half a cup of baking soda. Leave it sprinkled on the carpet overnight – when you vacuum the mixture up the next morning things will suddenly smell delightfully better.
o If the carpet is dirty, you may be able to use baking soda and vinegar to lift the stains. But, do first test for colourfastness by sprinkling a little baking soda on an inconspicuous patch. If all goes well, pour on a small amount of vinegar. When the bubbling has finished let the carpet dry before finishing off with a vacuum cleaner.
I found these ideas amazing, and they all worked too. No more expensive household cleaning materials for me these days. If you do not have the time to spend on cleaning though, you will find a cleaner easily when you search for cleaner quotes on Mr-Skill.
