Clean that Grout! RSS

Posted in Tiling & Flooring on Nov 17

If you’ve got tiled floors, tiled splash backs and tiled walls in your home (and we all have these in abundance these days) then the chances are that the grout is looking grotty, unless, that is, you’ve kept your hand to it. Why is this? It’s simple really. As every London Tiler knows, grout is a cement product and cement absorbs grease and grime.

In the bathroom, the dirt is usually mould from steam, soap accumulation and what’s best described as body residues. Find a Tiler on Mr-SkillWipe wet walls and glass doors regularly and things will stay under control. Ignore this advice, and in a month or two your bathroom will start looking yucky, and it’s time for elbow grease and chemicals.

You’ll find mildew in the kitchen too, and food spills trafficked by feet across the floor. Some ingredients such as saffron and tomato sauce have amazing staining properties as well as legendary tastes, and you should wipe them right away. If you don’t, suddenly you’ll notice that cute has left your kitchen, and that it’s time to start cleaning up again.

• If things are not all that bad yet, you can try cleaning off the grout with either vinegar, baking soda or sugar soap. A steam cleaner can also help blast the dirt away but watch out for the mess. Never use ammonia-based cleaners on white grout, because they turn it yellow over time.

• Find a Tiler on Mr-SkillDidn’t work? Then try commercial cleaners like Mr Clean or Lysol, making sure you wash them away completely. Be careful of using corrosive products that can make your hands tingle – especially if your waste water ends up in a soak away.

• Still got problems? Then I’m afraid you need to Find a Tiler to rake out the offending grout and replace it with a matching one. Be careful of trying this yourself though – it’s not difficult to chip an exposed tile edge and you may not have a spare.

We have a comprehensive database of Tilers on Mr-Skill serving every UK postcode, and we can arrange several Tilers’ Quotes for you in just a few hours. Their rates will be better than competitive, and we don’t charge customers for our service. Moreover, our other customers have already rated them for quality.

Cooking Smells RSS

Posted in Cleaning Services on Jul 14

Find a CleanerThe problems related to cooking smells lingering in the house go back to Ancient Roman times, when people strewed fresh rosemary twigs complete with leaves they crushed by walking on them. Forget about expensive gas-propelled spray canisters though – the smell they make is often worse than the problem. And that goes for simmering vinegar on the cooking top as far as I am concerned as well. Before you rush off and Find a Cleaner, here are a few useful hints you may first like to try.

Extraction fans can sometimes help if you can stand the noise they make. But they use electricity, and extract the heat that warms our homes in winter too. Hardly the right approach to use these greener days, especially with rising energy costs and looming shortages.

My wife and I are lucky because we have a lemon tree growing in the back garden that yields a copious Find a Cleanersupply of these glossy yellow fruit. We use a lemon sliced in half to go over the stovetop, sink and counters after wiping them down. This disinfects them too, and they smell beautifully clean.

The London Cleaner we hired when we lived in the City liked to simmer half a lemon in a saucepan whenever frying food or baking dinner in the oven. It seemed to pull the odours from the air and leave a fresh lemon smell lingering. We have used this wonderful idea ever since, and thank mother nature and her for it too.

If, however, the cooking smells have already set then consider asking for Cleaner Quotes on Mr-Skill. They could prove to be surprisingly affordable and in no time at all your home could be smelling lovely once again. Just fancy that!

A Dirty Shower Head Hides other Evils RSS

Posted in Kitchen Fitting on May 09

In our busy sometimes hectic life we get used to things too easily. Like the petrol gauge dropping lower and the cookie jar Bathroom Scalegetting empty. Too soon we find that the lawn has become unkempt, and that the windows need cleaning too.

Pretty much the same applies to plumbing fittings in the bathroom (and in the kitchen too). Scale, which is a limestone deposit in the water builds up over time and can conceivably end up blocking pipers. It also builds up in our kettles and could cause a boiler element to overheat.

But that is not all. As scale builds up it covers the body residues we leave behind in baths and showers, and could cause a lung infection when it chips away and we inhale the myobacterium avium dust it hides. Do not panic, and do not use antibacterial sprays that kill the good bacteria that are our friends. Solve the problem in a natural way instead – that way you are unlikely to need Bathroom Fitter Quotes either.

o Bathroom ScaleRemove the tap heads and shower rose

o Fill an old pan with water and half a cup of vinegar and bring it to the boil. Do not inhale the fumes.

o Soak the shower rose and tap heads in the liquid for twenty minutes

o Rinse the fittings under cold running water and replace them. Repeat the process if the scale is deep, and diarise to do the job every three months.

Unless your hands are stiff and sore you should be able to do this job yourself. If not, then Mr-Skill would be delighted to Find a Bath Fitter to help do this for you. Then you could enjoy your shower in perfect safety.

Moving into a Dirty House RSS

Posted in Cleaning Services on Nov 22

Did you just take occupation of a house you bought, and find it filthy dirty? Well rest assured that you are not the only one to have this problem – it is often more the rule than the exception nowadays. It happened to me once too. Here are some good ideas I picked up from cleaners in London that gave me sterling service, and were surprisingly cheap too.

o Scuffmarks on a resilient kitchen floor are common even in a well loved home. A rubbing paste made out of baking soda and a little warm water will soon work them away.

o Are the enamelled sinks and bathtubs full of dirty stains? Soak a few brown paper bags in bleach and leave them in them overnight. Next morning, prepare to be pleasantly surprised.

o Many houses smell really awful, as if their owners put up with this for years. Combine one-teaspoon lemon juice and one of baking powder, mix this with two cupfuls of hot water, put the mixture in a trigger spray, spray it around the house, and your smelly problems will be gone.

o To clean a smelly carpet, first make up a mixture of one-cup borax, one-cup cornmeal, and half a cup of baking soda. Leave it sprinkled on the carpet overnight – when you vacuum the mixture up the next morning things will suddenly smell delightfully better.

o If the carpet is dirty, you may be able to use baking soda and vinegar to lift the stains. But, do first test for colourfastness by sprinkling a little baking soda on an inconspicuous patch. If all goes well, pour on a small amount of vinegar. When the bubbling has finished let the carpet dry before finishing off with a vacuum cleaner.

I found these ideas amazing, and they all worked too. No more expensive household cleaning materials for me these days. If you do not have the time to spend on cleaning though, you will find a cleaner easily when you search for cleaner quotes on Mr-Skill.

Cleaning a Venetian Blind RSS

Posted in Cleaning Services on Sep 14

Venetian (or horizontally slatted blinds) are really great because you can adjust them to block out bright light and prying eyes too. The downside though is keeping them clean and free of dust. A weekly flick with a feather duster helps – however two or three times a year you really do need to take a Venetian blind down for a good clean. You could find a housekeeper to do this on Mr-Skill, but is this absolutely necessary? Before you find a cleaner, ask yourself the question, could I not do this myself?

o Choose a sunny day. Before you start, locate a ladder and a friend to hold this for you. Professional housekeepers in London fire apprentices for climbing up on chairs to remove blinds, because they know that a fall could be fatal, and that the insurance will not pay for taking chances.

o Lower the blind completely and open up the slats before unclipping it. Place it in a bathtub or a children’s plastic pool. Do not use a bath that has been re-enameled because the vinegar might stain it.

o Fill the bathtub with warm water until the blinds are covered. Add three to four litres of vinegar and mix this in thoroughly with your hands.Wear long-sleeved plastic gloves if your skin is sensitive.

o Leave the blinds soaking until the dirt has dissolved completely. Stirring the water will speed this up.

o Drain the bathtub. Use a shower attachment to rinse the Venetian blind thoroughly. Allow it to dry completely on a towel outside. While you are waiting, clean the bathtub thoroughly.

o Re-hang your Venetian blind. Leave it fully down and the window open. Do not attempt to raise the blind until the strings are fully dry.

If you are not confident that you could do the job yourself, do not stress. Get housekeeper quotes from Mr-Skill.
